Hi All ,

when it comes FA opening balances , we need to populate the depreciation period  and depreciation period remaining field values

I am really not understanding that how to populate the Depreciation period and depreciation period remaining field values.

Could you all share your experience.?

    Hi Lally,

    Imagine you had an asset bought exacly 3 years ago. Normal lifetime would be 5 years. So in this case 36 months are depreciated out of the 60. 24 are remaining.

    After entering the opening balances in journals, you can enter the lifetime of 60 months and the remaining periods will be 24. In this case AX can calculate all predefined depreciation methods.

    Let me try put my query in detail .

    Actual Asset Purchased on  JAN -1 -11 and Actual Cost  - 1,00,000.

    Asset  Service Life - 5 Years , Depreciation periods - 60 ( 5 * 12)

    Depreciation As on  DEC-31-13 and Depreciation amount  - 40 ,000.

    Assume that we need to populate the opening balances of Fixed Assets on JAN -1-14.

    First I need to upload the FA master data , during upload the FA master data do i need to upload the  FA   Service Life , Depreciation periods and Depreciation periods remaining also ?

    Am I correct ?

    Assume that i have uploaded the FA data along with FA service life , Depreciation periods .

    Now i need to upload the FA Opening balances .So my transaction date is DEC-12-13.

    First Acquisition Entry :

    DEC-12-13   Acquisition    - FA 0001   - 1,00,000  - 77777( Error account/ Opening balance account )

    Can you tell me acquisition entry do i need to pass on the actual FA acquisition date or Opening balances date ?

    Second Accumulated Depreciation  Entry :

    DEC-12-13   Depreciation    - FA 0001   - 40,000  - 77777(Error account/ Opening balance account )

    My question is after passing the above opening entries do i need to upload the Service life and Depreciation periods data or During upload the FA master i need to upload the data ?

    Hi Lally,

    About uploading the FA master data etc: I always upload all details of the asset book as at minimum one asset book should created. So Service life and depreciation perdiods will be filled. Probably you can leave these blank, I have always used a procedure that still works.

    Acquisition date: When posting the opening balance I use the transaction date DEC-12-13. If you use the original date, you will have to create and close many old fiscal years. That will give some additional work and overhead in the system.

    After posting the opening balances you have to correct the asset book data with the actual figures again. During acquisition it will probably update the acq. date. And during posting of the depreciation it will think it should decrease the remaining periods. So yes then you have to upload these attributes again.
