Item Master Uploads

Hi Daxers,

We have a need to keep track of bills of materials in our system - but we are not actually selling these bills of materials.  Basically we upload new bills of materials into our system - with all of the individual components information being stored in these bills of materials.  The individual components are the items that we are selling - and they are automatically added as new parts when we do our upload. We want the BOM info in our system so that we can see what the BOM as a whole looks like, but never want to sell that top item.

Does this make sense?  Can this be done?  Basically it is a mass upload of new items on a regular basis - all of the relevant info will be on each individual item in the BOM - we want the BOM to exist as a whole, but never want to keep inventory on it or process orders for it.

Thanks!

    Hi Rosy,

I don't see any problem with what you are suggesting.

You can sell component items as easily as top level items in AX. If you do not attempt to make, sell or forecast the top level item, I can't think when AX would ever use the BOM.

To import BOMs you can use the DIXF tool. It will import BOM headers (BOM versions) and BOM lines if the items already exist in AX.

    Hi Guy,

That is the tricky part the BOM line items will not already exist in AX - we will add them when we add the BOM - is there any way to import a BOM header with new parts as line items - if all necessary info is coming over with the line items?

    Thanks,

    Rosey

    Hi Rosey,

DIXF can import new Items. You need to use the 'Product' entity.

I imagine it would be possible to create a Processing group which imports BOM Versions, Products and then BOM (lines). I think it should also be possible for the source data file for the Products and BOM lines part of the import to be the same. Obviously you'd need to put fields required by both imports into that file.

Alternatively, a custom entity could be created which creates Products and BOM lines in one, but I suggest you'd need some half way decent developer skills to do that.
