Delete Operating Unit?

(1) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 41

I'm using Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365 F&O), and I'm
facing challenges while trying to delete certain operating units that
were previously set up.

  1. Operating Units with Grayed Out /Delete/ Button (In Hierarchy > Yes):

    • I've noticed that for operating units where the /Delete/ button is
grayed out, it's because they are marked as /In hierarchy > Yes./
I've attempted to remove them from the hierarchy, but this action
doesn't seem to have any effect.
  2. Issue with the Operating Unit /Budgeting/ (Not In Hierarchy):

    • Specifically, I'm encountering an issue with the Operating Unit
named /Budgeting./ This unit is not marked as /In hierarchy,/ and I'd
like to delete it. However, when I attempt to do so, I receive the
      following error message:

/Internal organization cannot be deleted while dependent User role
organization assignments exist. Delete dependent User role organization
      assignments and try again./

    • I've thoroughly searched through D365 F&O but haven't been
able to identify this dependency that's preventing me from deleting the
      operating units.

Could someone please provide guidance on why I'm unable to delete these operating units and how to address this issue?

You need to remove all workers, contractors and employees in the HR module, and unlink positions as well. It's not easy to remove LE's in D365FO.

    Hi,

After you removed the operating unit from the hierarchy, you need to publish, then only it will work and will be removed from the hierarchy.

    Hi Plotiv,

Unfortunately, after the operating has been used in a hierarchy or as a dimension value before, there is no option to remove the operating unit. As the hierarchies do support date effectiveness, the records are not deleted, but marked with an expiry date. In case it has been used as a dimension value, it is also restricting the operating unit to be deleted.

The error with user role organization assignments can be due to having them used in security assignments. Have you checked if this is the case?

I had an Operating Unit called Budgeting (department) that I wanted to delete because it was redundant. We already have a Finance (department) that covers the same functions. We are a small business and I like to keep things simple.

To delete this Operating Unit, I had to remove some of the users who had the following roles: Budget Clerk, Budget Manager, and Budget Contributor. I was not sure which users to remove, but after removing these ones, I was able to delete the Operating Unit.

I am still confused about the relationship between the Operating Units I create, the security roles, and the users assigned to those roles.
