Add Fields From Related Entity to View

I have 2 entities - Applications and Confirmations. There is a 1:N parental relationship from Applications to Confirmations and the resulting N:1 parental relationship from Confirmations to Applications. From the Confirmations view, I can add fields from the Applications view.

I need to be able to add some fields from the Confirmations entity to a view on the Applications entity. How can I achieve this? (apologies if this is a simple question but I seem to have a mental block on this).

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

You cannot do this because there could be multiple Conformation records and a view can only show fields from a N:1 relationship.

    Hope this helps

Maybe to clarify this a bit to remove the "mental block".. this is different from SQL joins since you will have 1 line per application in the "applications" view - it's not like you will have 1 line per each matching pair of application & confirmation(in other words, if you have 1 application and 10 confirmations, you will still have only 1 line in the applications view). This means Dynamics would not know which confirmation record to use if you wanted to display confirmation columns in that view.. and, in the end, it does not even allow you to add those columns.

    Hi

As there are multiple records in Confirmation, consider rollup (example sum of a particular field value of all Confirmation records) field in Application entity.

Thanks all... Yes, that makes sense now! I'll need to rethink things I guess.

My requirement is that I create a report (a CSV) that follows the course of the Application to Confirmation. Most of the fields I need in the report originate on the Application, but there are a dozen or so that reside on the Confirmation. With regard to there being potentially more than one Confirmation, this is true, but I only need to report on one of them and this would be easy to identify based on the record name (contains a particular text string).

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is it possible to use a workflow to copy the fields from the Confirmations to the Application entity - this might allow me to create a view containing the required fields?

I suppose another option would be to have two separate Entities for the Confirmations - one that is the one I need to report on, and the other for all other confirmations...

Before creating a separate entity for your confirmation you need to report on, I'd rather add a field to identify the confirmation you need to report on and a new lookup on the application to confirmations.

Then you could trigger a workflow on change of that new field on the confirmation, that fills the lookup on the application.

So you could access the fields you need.

Yes, exactly.. or, if it's simply the latest confirmation, you might not even need a field - just populate that lookup with the newly created confirmation using a workflow(which will run "on create" of the confirmation records)
