New to NAV administration: many questions

I got our NAV infastructure dropped on my lap with no knowledge of it whatsoever.  I am being asked to take on all of this knowledge without any assistance.  That is where I am coming to you all for!  Keep in mind, all of these are in Nav 2013.  I apologize ahead of time for the extreme new questions.  I am an experienced SQL DBA, so I know that end.

First, I am looking to give access to a couple of higher ups in the company access to the form designer.   How would I go to do that?

Also, I am looking to increase the size of a memo field for checks, the exact question is:

"here is a description on a check in the “external document no.” field that is causing the error below. This prevents the bank reconciliation routine from uploading ANY transactions to the bank reconciliation file.
We have had this error many times in the past and someone would need to go in the “backend” and truncate the description."

    hi,

form designer: only developers should have permission to edit the pages in the designer (no forms any more in nav 2013). to many cooks ruin the meal. for developers you need a developer license:

    for memo field check this:

    Dear CJ,

Do not provide form design or any other modification capability to a person who does not have experience in the NAV development. One mistake will lead to many issues in the system.  ( Modification only should be done via a help of a NAV developer).

    Hi CJ,

Can you please let us know why you need to give access of form Designer to users?

I recommend to do not give this permission to anyone who do not know how to customize the screen. however in customer license only field adding is possible on form and not modification in base code and for that you need developer license.

for the second question  about error while uploading the file. it is possible to have that same field is having different text length in tables. just debug and check that in which table it gives error. contact your development partner and ask them to increase the field size if it is an error.

    Regards,

    Saurabh Shah

The reason why we are looking at giving the one employee access is because she is the primary person using our NAV, and she was wondering if it was possible to make the changes without emailing me every time she wants to do anything.

Is there any place online to get some good (and preferably cheap) NAV training?

    hi,

depending on the needs you'll need at least an application builder license for that special employee (or if it includes not enough permissions for you, you'll need a full developer license).

very important: each of you should document changes in existing objects.

    nav training: start with...

    community.dynamics.com/.../training-material-what-s-new-in-nav2013.aspx

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh173988(v=nav.70).aspx

also ther are many training videos available at youtube.
