How can I delete a large number of general journal lines quickly?

We have customer invoices that come across to D365 FO and create a general journal. Due to certain errors, I occasionally have to delete the entire journal before posting it. These are usually large, 5,000 - 10,000 lines. If I try to delete the journal itself, it times out. So I have to delete groups of lines at a time. I filter on specific criteria (e.g. customer number beginning with 1) and delete that group of lines, then filter on another criteria (e.g. customer number beginning with 2) and delete that group, and so on. Each group takes 10-60 minutes to delete.

I'm looking for suggestions on ways to speed up this process. Or another method to delete the lines?

There really isn't another out of the box method for deleting journals. What are some of the typical errors you encounter? Might it be possible to fail the integration entirely (so that no journal is created) if validation errors are encountered during import?

Main error is transaction out of balance. We're working on correcting in the source system but that'll take a while.

Hi Lisa,

If you have the journal lines form opened, there is a function (top action bar) for deleting the journal lines. This can still take some time, but should be much quicker compared to deleting the lines via the form grid itself.

Is this where you're referring: Functions >Delete journal lines?

I'll try that next time and see if it'll delete all lines without timing out. Thank you!

I had a journal with 10,000 lines, used your suggestion, and it removed them with one round that took 40 minutes. Thank you again!

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the feedback and sharing the new numbers. When reading your first attempts, the 40 minutes might be faster compared to what you used to have before. I think 40 minutes is still a long duration time. However, deleting 10,000 lines shouldn't be a daily job.

That's correct.. previously, I was filtering on a certain account and deleting all lines with that account, which would take anywhere from 5-20 minutes. I'd spend 2-3 hours total getting through all of them. So this is a big improvement!

Hi Lisa,

If you are on a tier 1 machine, this can be done from SQL using developers help . We can also get access to UAT db to do the same.
