How to Create a Data Entity in D365 FO for Import Scenarios with Repetitive Field Values

Hi All,

I need to import data from an Excel file into Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. The file contains around 2000 records , but the challenge is that all fields in the file contain duplicate or repeated values.

Since a primary key is required to build a data entity, I’m unsure what the best approach is in this scenario.

Thanks in Advance.

    Hi Charan,

    A few questions:
    1. Are these repetitive records spread across multiple legal entities?

    Suggestions:
    1. You will have to have an unique identifier field in the data entity that could be a running numbering series and have the data uploaded from Excel into D365 FO.
    2. The entity key should be based on the unique identifier field mentioned in point number 1.
    3. For recurring imports, you can use schedule the file to be imported through Data Management framework, as a batch (with recurrence) or you can leverage recurring integrations capabilities in D365 FO

Hope this helps. Happy to answer questions, if any.

I would start with business requirements and design the implementation based on them.

How do you want to import the duplicate data? Do you want, for example, take just the first record with the given value of a column (or a combination of columns) and ignore the duplicates?

    Hi Charan12,

What is the actual business requirement? Is this a one time import or will it become recurring import? Are you able to change the source so you won't have duplicates in the Excel file? Possibly, you can clean it with some formulas to find the duplicates?

If it will be a recurring task where you can't get rid of the duplicates, you can consider importing all details in a new custom staging table and from there have a batch job that will read and process the data.
