Kernel version unchanged after upgrade from AX 2012 R3 RTM to CU10 - does it need to be run again?

I have been testing upgrading our AX 2012 R3 test instance from RTM to CU10. It seems to have worked, since it's not asking for any post-upgrade tasks to be run and the system seems to work, but when I check the Help/About it shows:

Kernel version: 6.3.164.0

Application version: 6.3.3000.110

Previously, of course, they were both 6.3.164.0. Is this the expected behaviour or has something not completed correctly? I would have expected the Kernel version to be updated as well.

Thanks

    Hi

You have tried to restart the Server where the Client is installed?

Are you sure you've upgraded all components? Namely the client on the machine on which you're logged in?

I'm currently running the client on the server and, obviously, restarted the AOS but haven't tried rebooting the server yet.

    Update:

I just checked the versions on the EXE files for both Ax32Serv and Ax32 and they both say 6.3.164.0, so rebooting the server is not going to change anything.

    Update 2:

    It didn't.

Well, it seems that you haven't upgraded either the client or the AOS. Please run the installer and upgrade them.

Don't forget that you have to upgrade all AOS servers and all clients (e.g. you might have AX client installed on ten machines; it's not enough to upgrade it on one of them).

This is a test server running both the AOS and the client, so I assumed it would upgrade both. I'll try it again.

Which, of course, leads to the next question... Since the UAT and production service will continue to run RTM for some time, what is the effect of running differing clients? I.e. an RTM client against a CU10 server or vice-versa.

I always recommend (and do in my implementations) to use the same version of client and server. I've seen serious problems when people used older clients than server; the other way around looks safer but I don't consider it worth the risk.

So what do you do for people who need to access sandbox, test, dev, UAT and productions instances which, obviously, aren't going to all be upgraded at once? Install multiple clients?

BTW, the retry update had all binary options greyed out, so wouldn't update anything, so I'm re-download from LCS.

Yes, if you need clients in two different versions, you install two clients, usually on two different terminal servers.

Rerunning the installer had all binary options greyed out so wasn't going to do anything.

Checking the message panel, it turns out that the system is missing some prerequisites (Report Viewer and System CLR Types). I've installed them and it's applied the binary updates so the versions are:

      Kernel: 6.3.3000.111

      Application: 6.3.3000.110

(And people wonder why I have such a low opinion of having consultants aka 'partners' set up systems!)

Glad you resolved it.  I was going to say look at this blog post -

    i1.blogs.msdn.com/.../ax-2012-r3-why-is-my-kernel-build-version-not-changing-after-installing-cu-8-or-the-latest-binary-hotfix.aspx

Also, if you had AX Visual studio tool installed on your RTM environment, you will need to un-install that.
