Dynamics GP 18.3 - Dialog buttons disappearing

Posted on by 728

We have configured remote desktop services on Windows server 2019.

Dynamics GP 18.3 client is installed on this server.
I have added the app as a remoteapp program.

We are having no issues launching the remoteapp, but we loose the ability to see checkboxes.  If we close out of the client and launch it again, they reappear.

Has anyone found a resolution for this?  I see several people asking the same question when I search, but do not see a resolution.

I am having a problem with the radio buttons and dialog disappearing.  I was told it is screen resolution.  Not sure if that is the fix.  I have to keep logging out and back in again.

It is now 10/17/2023 and I am still having the issue with radio/checkboxes "disappearing".

I know it is a resolution issue, but it really confounds me that nothing has been done to correct this issue.

I do appreciate the helps people have provided.  I really do.

I am disappointed that Microsoft has not done more to fix this issue.

Once a month I do a search to see if there is something new......nothing.

I tried the scaling.reg manifest solution and no luck.

    E. Scaling.reg and .manifest file

We've seen this option resolve size issues in Microsoft Dynamics GP to include fields in GP windows that were smaller than normal, as well as a GP login window that was showing smaller than normal.

         1. On this laptop where Microsoft Dynamics GP is installed, save this text to a file called "Scaling.reg" and save changes.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide]
    "PreferExternalManifest"=dword:00000001

         2. Once you have created the Scaling.reg file, make a backup of the Windows Registry on the workstation or server, then double-click on this .reg file to import it into the Windows Registry on this machine where Dynamics GP is installed.

         3. Next, download this file named “Dynamics.exe.manifest”, from the following link:

            Dynamics.exe.manifest

         4. Copy this Dynamics.exe.manifest file to the directory where Microsoft Dynamics GP is installed onto, such as the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP##\ directory, on the workstation or server.

         5. Restart this workstation or server where you copied this Dynamics.exe.manifest file onto.

         6. Launch Microsoft Dynamics GP again on this same machine, and have the users verify whether or not the display and/or font issues within Microsoft Dynamics GP now look correct or not.

**NOTE: We've seen this solution also work with RDWeb and RemoteApp implementations as well as RDS connections.

This is a very timely discussion here about RemoteApp. I have been thinking about going down that road and now I don't believe I will.

    Long live RDS!

You absolutely have it correct with the RemoteApp team.  Microsoft has become so large, they cannot communicate with each other in their different departments.  :(

This is a RemoteApp issue since Windows Server 2016.  It did not occur prior to that.  I have yet to see it manifest in a full Remote Desktop session.  Typically the registry modification and manifest file that Joseph links to (written by Derek) resolves the issue but I am seeing cases now where if the user minimizes the Dynamics GP window then maximizes it again while running as a RemoteApp or makes it less than full screen and moves the window, the buttons and check boxes disappear. At that point the only option seems to be log out and relaunch the RemoteApp. My suggestion is to apply the fix referenced in Derek's post and educate users to leave it at full screen or give users full Remote Desktop sessions.

Also, good luck with a support case to the RemoteApp team.  Their response since Server 2016 seems to be that Remote Desktop Services is fine and you should take it up with the software vendor as their code is not handling the RemoteApp platform correctly.

I'd put in a support case with the RemoteApp team to further investigate the issue with the buttons/checkboxes missing when running the application through RemoteApp. Thanks

Thank you for your reply.  We are on server 2019 for the RDS server.

After testing today and using GP directly from the RDS server, I have not lost the buttons and checkboxes, so indeed it does appear to be how the remoteapp is being delivered.

Should I put in a support ticket with Microsoft?  This is very irritating to our users to tell them to close out of GP and log back in.

    Thank you for the reply.

Primarily we use it as a remoteapp.

I will try to use it today on a server with the client installed to see if it happens outside of being used as a remoteapp.

RE: Dynamics GP 18.3 - Dialog buttons disappearing

    Hi,

As Joe & Derek already mentioned, this issue is not related to GP itself (though to some extend it is), but rather the Windows OS version the RDS server is setup with.. I've witnessed over the years the shift from Windows 2003 all the way to Server 2019 and with every new release, there are other irritants that come up, but most noticeable was the switch from 2003/2008 to 2012 where Microsoft abandoned the 3D effects on the desktop and flattened everything in the dialog boxes and rendering.

Many buttons and checkboxes don't even show up properly since then and there is not much you can do, other than trying to play with the display & compatibility settings on the RDS server side for the GP application.
