Approval Workflow

I am creating a new workflow (new to these).  I need to send to the Controller for approvals, unless it is the Controller who created the journal entry - in which case, the approval needs to go to a VP.

How can I tell who created the journal entry?  I do not see a field in the ledger journal table indicating who the user is.
