Hi,
Can you please help to understand if XDS works on power BI report. I have few report published in powerBI.com (eg. sales analytics) workspace and I am trying to attach them in F&O workspace (Options > Open report catalog > select report ). So will XDS be applied on to them?
Also for the dashboard (CFO, CEO) will XDS work? If not then what is the way to assign record level security in both the CFO/CEO workspace and embedded reports (eg. sales analytics)
Regards
XDS works on data entities as well. Assuming your Power BI reports show data directly from data entities, XDS works.
If you export entities to BYODB and your reports use BYODB as data source you have to define the security in the database by yourself.
Hi Nikolaos,
Thanks for the reply. FOr my case if the report is accessing data from AXDW (entity store), in that case will XDS work?
Also I believe the CFO, CEO dashboard access the data from entity store. So how will the record level security work for them?
I'm not 100% sure but I think that it might not be possible. Would you llke the aggregate measurements only aggregate such records that the user is allowed to see? Or what is your functional requirement?
Yes. I Would you like the aggregate measurements only aggregate such records that the user is allowed to see. That allowance will be implemented by XDS.
The aggregation data is processed system wide (not per user) from the actual database to AXDW database. So I don't see how it could have different content for different users/roles. But I don't have actual knowledge about this topic so perhaps my reasoning is wrong.
Just to confirm, XDS will not work for PowerBI reports. (Regardless if it is Embedded or hosted in PowerBI.com)
So, one has to be extremely careful in designing which datasources to be available in which report..
The AX developer has to carefully plan this and assist PowerBI report developers (if necessary)
So is there any way to assign record level security in powerBI reports?
Thanks
Hello Sayanika,
PowerBI has its own (independent) security framework.
If you want limit the data users can access in a PowerBI report then have a look at the following MS docs site:
docs.microsoft.com/.../service-admin-rls
If you need more information, then have a look at the PowerBI community forum as well.
https://community.powerbi.com/
Best regards,
Ludwig
Hi Sayanika,
Crispin is correct here. AXDW is filled with all data. Ludwig provided alternatives for you. It even doesn't work if you display a PowerBI report in a dashboard.
XDS can only be applied when interacting directly with data by accessing the Dynamics 365 client or via Odata (Data entities).
"..So is there any way to assign record level security in powerBI reports?.."
To answer this question, you have to share where the PowerBI reports will be hosted. (Embedded in D365FO application / PowerBI.com)
The security options are completely different for each case.
