Subcontract BOM line items

Posted on by 60

How do you add a Service item to a BOM for subcontracting in AX 2012 R3?

In 2009 I was told that you added it as a Vendor type item and the item could be an Item or a Service item. But it doesn't seem to work in 2012 R3. We'd prefer a Service item since that is what we are purchasing. However, when I add a vendor BOM line, the Item lookup list in the BOM line doesn't include Service items. AX Help menu says you can do it. "The service or work that is performed by the subcontractor must be created as a BOM or Service item in the Released product details form. You can attach it to the parent item as a BOM line.

The route must contain an operation that is assigned to the subcontractor's operations resource. (source: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa573189.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

I would suggest a change in the label for the "non stocked" parameter... This is a very common misconception...

I believe that AX will not let you use standard costing on items that fall into this scenario.

The item will not have any On-hand, because the 'Service' item setting tells AX not to track On-hand. So the BOM will not actually consume physical inventory of the service item.

    Hi bbaker,

This is a best practice recommendation from MS. Please see here blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../service-products-in-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012

    Hope this helps,

    Ludwig

GuyUk, Thank you so much. Can you tell me does using a stocked service item allowed if you are using standard costing?

And, by inventory transactions does this mean the service item will have quantity on hand? Theoretically it should balance to zero if you purchase service item and receive it, then consume it in the BOM, correct?

    Hi bbaker,

'Service' item means don't track On-hand for this item.

'Non-stocked' on the model group means don't create Inventory transactions.

BOM lines for service items need to have a 'Stocked' model group so that Inventory transactions are created. Inventory transactions are used to ensure the cost of the service item can get onto the production order.

Thanks for your time investigating. It turns out to enter a BOM line for a service item the Item model group for the service item must be a stocked item model group. Not sure why you stock a service item.

    Hello,

On your item look up, are there tabs available at the top of the look up to make additional items available?

I remember having a similar issue where this drop down showed only BOM type items, however an additional tab allowed access to ALL type items

    *Is it the item released?*

Let me know otherwise and I shall investigate

    Kind regards
