How to change dynamics CRM server role with a script ?

Posted on by 15

Hi,

We are running on premise installation with several frontend and backend servers. During working hours we get lots of load from our portal to our frontend servers and during the night we run several heavy workflows in async backend servers. So I would like to have some of the frontend servers to backend servers between 22:00 and 07:00

Now I know we can change frontend server to be a backend server by disabling/enabling server roles - but cai it be done with a PowerShell script ?

Cheers,

Pekka

Hi Pedro, thank you for your input. It does look like enable/disable servers would be  only option with PowerShell. We run this on VMware, so maybe we need to study this option together with VMware server images...

    1. Disable server

    2. Switch image

    3. Enable server and so on

    Hello Pekka,

    Hope you are well.

It's not a trivial request. I'm not sure if dynamics powershell library has that function, but doesn't see so at a quick glance:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.crm.powershell/?view=dynamics365ce-ps

I'm not going to discuss here if you really need that "conversion" but what about:

    - Creating additional backend servers

    - Installing also the backend roles on those frontend server, and then play with shutting down the services when not needed, instead of removing/adding roles.
