License assignment to Users

Hi,

When we create a user in Admin.microsoft.com, we assign a D365FO App license to the user.

Does this assignment has any effect inside the D365 FO system? I mean even if I assign a Finance license on admin center, I can give the user SCM roles in the Application. Why is that possible?

How does the licensing between admin center and Users (System Adminstration) work together?

    Hi MYGz,

    Microsoft introduced the split of licensing where the application was not fully ready to support license enforcement. Microsoft made some updates incrementally to ensure the information about roles in the application is correct. I do expect that a correct license enforcement will come. I think Microsoft first want to be confident that there are no negative effects for existing customers.

    Despite you can assign another role, you still have to meet the license requirements. If you have a Finance user and assign a SCM role, this user should also have a SCM attach license.

    Hi Andre, I read your blog on how to properly create a user in D365 FO. Is my understanding correct that the admin who assigns the licences in the admin center should know whether the D365 user will need only Finance or Finance+attached SCM? In current state since there is not the connection between admin center and D365 in regards to licences, our customers bought the required number of licences but I suppose they do not assigned them in the admin center. What do you think about this? By the way I read in the Licence guide that Admins are at no cost now?

    Hi Lukas,

    I haven't read the latest Licensing guide(s) in full detail. I would need to find the latest and read about the System administrator myself. Note that if it is stated, the intention would be that this user will not perform daily business operations in the application.

    It would be best-practice to start assigning the correct licenses. Some services are dependent already on the license assignments. E.g. auto user creation in F&O and some integrations with the Power Platform are checking for the correct license assignment. In case of base+attach, again, this would be best practice, but still as of today, there is no enforcement.
