Is there any way to copy a free text invoice?
Similar to using a voucher template?

I would like to use an existing Free Text Invoice in the A/R module as a template for a new free text invoice. I.e. copy the customer account, invoice lines, dimensions ++ from an existing posted free text invoice to a new.

Hi Thor,
You can make a copy of the FreeTextInvoice report and modify the design from there. Then, depending on what you want to do, you could, for example, add a button to the FreeTextInvoice form that calls this report.
Some important classes to look at for this mod would be CustPostInvoiceJob, CustPrintOutInvoice and SalesFormLetter_FreeText

I think I am using the wrong terminology. It is not the Free text invoice report that I am looking to copy, but the free text invoice record it self.
Ex: In A/R, Free text invoice details we can create free text invoices not connected to sales orders or projects but to GL accounts. After creating such an invoice, I would like to copy it next month, change the invoice date, perhaps the customer id and post again with a new invoice number.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. There is no out of the box functionality to do this. You can however use the standard import / export in the admin module. Export out the records from previous month, change date and import in.
I don't however think this will speed up the process any unless you want to reissue hundreds of free text invoices.
This functionality will be available in next release of AX 2012. We developed this feature on AR with named Recurring Invoices. This was already demonstrate on AX Tech 2011 conference.

Customization would do - free text invoice template
can I now (as of 10-26-2015) use a posted free text invoice and make a new invoice by copying the posted one?
You can use templates invoices but you must create a template document and then create a Free Text by using the template but you can’t copy free text documents.
