Hello hockeymom,
You are correct, and this basic functionality can be easily performed in D365 for Marketing. Here are the brief steps:
1. Design your email with the link to the Event website - simply drag and drop the event tile in your email to get the correct URL (or pick it up from the event itself), test send it make sure it looks A-Okay, and make it go Live. It's ready to use! Also, design the "Confirm registration" email, which you want to send when an invitee registers.
2. Create the segment of the people you want to invite for your event.
3. Create a customer journey - and here you use our Event Marketing template - and see the entire customer journey outline created for you. Simply set the right segment (you created in step 2) and the right emails (the invitation email and the confirmation email). Then, you can delete the extra tiles (did you want to send them a reminder email if they did not open your original email? You can do that too!).
Go live with the journey, and you're done!
Once the journey is live, you can check back to see the insights of how many people were sent the email, how many registered and got the confirmation etc.
Here's a link to a few articles that can get you started. (docs.microsoft.com/.../basic-tutorials)
