Our JE numbers are currently in the 900,000's, does anyone know if they will just continue on after they reach 999,999 or will they start over from the beginning?
Thanks!

Hi Bill,
Just to add to this I know of a client that has lots of journals every year and as a consequence they reset the journal number back to 1 after every GL year end. As you probably know this works fine as you can use the same journal number as long as its in a different financial year. (when they first did this it did break a third party product off memory though which needed fixing). Therefore even if you never reset the number the system should revert to 1 after passing 99,999,999 as long as 1 isn't in the same year. (therefore there's a hard limit of 99,999,999 per year)
I don't know of any one else I've come across who resets numbers though.
Thanks
Gavin
First, if there is anyone that knows why this should not be done, please be sure to post an objection.
Second, after the year end closing has been completed, all backups are done and safely put away, you can update the Next JE number in Financial >> Setup >> Financial >> General Ledger
Enter the number you want to start with - in my case 2100000
As to how this has impacted Finance - not sure it really makes a big difference - it was started by a controller long since gone from the company, but old traditions die hard and this is one that is just part of the Year End process for this client.
Good day,
Hope all is well and keeping safe, I think this idea is cool. Where would you go to change these numbers? Also, how has this assisted the finance operations?
Regards
Rosemary
Just to keep the conversation going,
What is the recommendation of the group for someone (anyone) that is approaching a limit like this - any field with a number that is going to MAX out at some time?
With JE - could you start the new Fiscal year with a new number sequence
IE:
21,000,000 - being Fiscal Year ending in 2021
22,000,000 - being Fiscal Year ending in 2022
and so on.
Does this make any sense or is this way off track? I have been in the past asked and I have not implemented this, with the exception of PO numbers - we restart them each year with the Fiscal Year as the first 2 digits - been doing that for the past 20 years and it seems to be working.
Just interested in what others might have to say.
The journal entry numbers can go up to 99,999,999 before they max out so you will still have time :)
Thanks!
