Warehousing requirements with R3 or 365

hi

we are currently in the process of looking at ax for a group ERP project, and i am confused on what exactly ax can deliver standard in the warehouse utilising mobile computers..

does it have its own mobile solution for picking stock etc? and if so what are its limitations (i was under the impression the Wax/trax upgrade improved a lot of the std functionality here)

why are companies continuing to purchase 3rd party software to bolt onto AX 2012 r3  for warehousing ?

any advice appreciated

mal

    Hi Raff,

AX 2012 R3 and also Dynamics 365 for Operations has its own mobile device support.

When companies are looking at other solutions, this might be related to supported features and/or have the software running independent from the ERP system. One customer where I did an implementation in the past wanted to have a software solution locally installed in their several warehouses. Note that Microsoft is working on a hybrid solution to have warehouse functionality available on-premise as well to support the requirement I was referring to. Then the warehouse can continue working without dependency on availability of the internet connection and availability of D365. The hybrid part is on the roadmap and not available yet.

    thanks Andre

some of the companies we are talking to regarding the implementation are trying to force us down the route of using various addons, but as yet i cant get a reason from them why Ax std will not work for us, we do nothing particularly complicated, we want to receipt, pick, transfer, replen on mobile devices.

what would you say is ax std's weak points with regards to mobile device support? is there alot of design/customization to do etc before it is usable?

    Hi Raff,

You have to check the warehouse operations supported by the warehouse mobile. Also there is some mandatory setup like using license plates. I have seen a customer getting frustrated by using the license plates as they were only having units without this license plate concept. The units were stored per piece on the locations. Using a mandatory license plate when you don't have it is cumbersome, but it would be possible to create and use them automatically with a customization.

Note that the new WHS as of AX 2012 R3 is the future standard where Microsoft will build upon. There must be a very good reason to be in the need for an add-on. My previous answer was more based on choosing another WMS system like Manhattan. I do agree with you that it feels insane to be pushed to buy add-ons.

Check the features and probably do a fit/gap analysis to see if the standard will be good for your organization and processes.

There are some cases where WMS from AX might not fit you if you have specific business requirements. If you have doubts about it, like Andre mentioned, I recommend performing a gap analysis between your business requirements and AX. Sometimes it will be easier create some basic customizations instead of buying an add-on.
