How to switch embedded power BI report datasource from AXDW to DataLake

Hi,

Can you please help me to clarify the following query

I have an D365 for Finance and Ops application. I have enabled power BI and embedded few standard reports into my workspace which is currently pointing to entitystore (AxDW)

Now if I create a new azure data lake and configure the connectivity and push all my entity store to the data lake, then which datasource will my power BI embedded reports point to ?  Is it still AXDW  or  DataLake?

If I want all my reports to point to Azure data lake instead of AXDW, then what is the process of ding it?

What are the steps for doing it in UAt as well as Production?

    If you are pushing entity store aggregate entities to data lake then your reports should be pulling data from data lake.

    One of the key benefits of utilizing a data lake as your staging area for BI and reporting, versus a traditional relational database, you can store many disparate types of data in a single location without a heavy investment in cleansing and transforming the data.

    Regarding the UAT and PROD  , you should be pushing data to data lake using the steps mentioned in the below article , Once you have data

    you should be able to pull data from there for your reporting purpose.

    Hello Sayanika,

    As Sukrut mentioned, the embedded PowerBI reports will point to the Azure data lake. Also, the reports will be published straight into the Azure Data Lake storage. This is the approach that is recommended for the UAT environment. 

    Hope you are using DirectQuery in PowerBI to pull data from Dynamics 365 F&SCM.

    For the production, environments continue using the entity store approach and configure PowerBI.com to point to the Azure Data Lake Storage. Using this approach, when you publish your entity store data it populates into the AxDW database and at the same time, extend the analytical workspaces to PowerBI.com. This approach also publishes your data into the Azure Data Lake indirectly. Ensure that you schedule a refresh in PowerBI.com, too.

    Thanks Sukrut and Navneeth for the quick response.

    So if I understood it correctly :  

    I have few embedded PBI reports which are already running and using AxDW as the data source (both in UAT and Prod). Now I create a new azure data lake and push my entity store to the data lake. So all my existing embedded PBI report will now start using ADLS as the data source in stead of AxDW. So that means there will be an automatic switchover for the datasource of my report?

    And If I create any new report, that will always point to azure data lake?

    Hello Sayanika,

    In the UAT instance, you can continue setting up your entity store to point to the Azure Data Lake. This will publish the reports in the Data lake. This will eventually publish all your reports to the Azure data lake. 

    In case of Production, use the following approach.
    For the production, environments continue using the entity store approach and configure PowerBI.com to point to the Azure Data Lake Storage. Using this approach, when you publish your entity store data it populates into the AxDW database and at the same time, extend the analytical workspaces to PowerBI.com. This approach also publishes your data into the Azure Data Lake indirectly. Ensure that you schedule a refresh in PowerBI.com, too. 

    Also, as per the link shared by Sukrut, Azure data lake is in public preview and is not recommended to be used in production environments. Check out the section Entity Store Data In Azure Data Lake (full push). Regarding the production environment instance, I would suggest getting confirmation through a Microsoft support ticket about the production environment approach.

    what I have understood from your comment regarding production environment, If  I continue with relational entity store DB for embedded power BI then related configuration that is required for azure data lake should not be done on the application. Is this understanding is correct?  

    Without Azure data lake configuration, How the data will be moved from the application to the Azure data lake for powerbi.com configuration?

    Kindly advise if I got it correct or is there any gap in my understanding? Or you are suggesting to get in touch with support team for production approach?...

    Hello Sayanika,

    Based on the set of questions raised, following is my recommendation.

    In case of the Production instance, i would suggest you to setup Azure Data Lake in PowerBi.com instead of setting it up on D365 F&SCM. Azure Data Lake storage is in Public preview mode and it is not recommended to be configured in Production instances of D365 F&SCM. So, you are not directly publishing your entity store data into the Azure data lake. Instead, you are publishing the entity store data through PowerBI.com into the Data Lake. 
    At the same time, raise a support ticket with Microsoft so that you know more about the support boundaries with the above mentioned approach.
