Upgrading from 2010 to 2018

Posted on by 5

We are in desperate needs of upgrading from 2010 to 2018 by the end of the year and would like to know the upgrade path and what other products that integrate with GP need to be upgraded as well.  Currently we are running a 2008 Terminal Server Enviornment with Citrix Xenapp6.0.  Our Domain Controllers are 2012R2.

Thank You

RE: Upgrading from 2010 to 2018

    HI Ghost87,

Do you have currently a VAR or Partner on file ? Is your maintenance contract current with Microsoft ? because the biggest problem right now is with many customers running on 'old' GP versions like 10, 2010 or 2013, is that they lapsed their maintenance contract, and thus are no longer eligible to upgrades on future versions (even 2015, 2016 or 2018/18.3), as they need licenses keys for each major GP version they want to upgrade..

I've see this many times, and their is no magic when your maintenance is expired.. You'll have to buy from scratch or opt for another solution (like hosted GP solutions, where you pay a monthly per-user fee).

If you're still under active contract, but don't want to use your regular partner, you can try to hire some independant consultants that might help you with that task. Based on the configuration of your environmnent and the number of ISV products that might be attached/linked to your GP, and the  number of companies, this can take anyway between 50 to 150 hours to complete.

Hope this helps to build up a case for your company.

If you want to know more, send me a DM.

Lots of testing..  You'll need a compatible sql at 2015 & 2018 GP level.    If you can virtualize your 2010 (make clone in dev environment), do a test upgrade to check for failures, etc.   Basically upgrade to 2015, check database & data, do the upgrade from 2015 to 2018 and checks again.  And if you're going to 18.3, do another upgrade and check

    2010 -> 2015 -> 2018 -> 18.3

I agree with what Bill mentioned, upgrading Dynamics GP isn't a 'simple' thing to do, especially if you're not familiar with the process.

Along with upgrade paths depending on what version and build of Dynamics GP you're currently on and going to, you also have to take into account Windows and SQL versions, and then third party and/or customizations as well. Also, any modified forms and reports you may have.

Going from Dynamics GP 2010 to Dynamics GP 2018 is going to be around 3 separate upgrades, depending on what you're currently on.

Your partner would be the best place to start or finding a consultant or someone that does this type of process.

That being said, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

    Thanks

This is a complex task only in that you need to ensure that all the correct versions are lined up.  There are steps and processes that make this a bit more than a simple 'ask the community question.  There are published steps, but getting one wrong can cause you issues down the path.

It is best that you have your Partner provide you assistance with process, but if you need technical assistance and are not able to connect with your Microsoft Partner to perform this migration please send me private message and we can discuss how we can assist with the remote support to make this project work for you.
