Dynamics AX 2012 on Windows Server 2012 Core

Hi,

Is it possible and has anyone done it yet to run Ax on a machine with Windows 2012 Core?
I would install Windows Core on the physical machine and run seperate Hyper-V Vm's for AOS, Terminal Server and Enterprise Portal.
For the price of a Windows Server Datacentre license I can buy 7 Standard licenses, but I'll neve rrun 7 VM's of that server.

SQL Server would run on a physical machine with Windows 2012 Standard.

Did you check the system requirements for Dynamics AX 2012 here: www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx ?

It says that the support versions are: Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition or Datacenter Edition.

    With the following remark:
Windows Server 2012 is supported by default with MicrosoftDynamics AX 2012 R2. To use Windows Server 2012 with an earlier version of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, you must install cumulative update 5 for Microsoft Dynamics AX

I'm not familiar with Windows 2012 Core, but if it is not mentioned by MS in the official system requirements, I would not recommend using it, although it might work. An AOS runs on Win7 too, but that does not mean you should run your production environment on it.

It also says so in the document:
Although a server operating system is required for most Microsoft Dynamics AX server components, you can also install some server components on supported client operating systems. However, this kind of installation is supported only for demonstration or development. In a production environment, you must install the server components on a supported server operating system.

Thank for you reply, although you may have misunderstood the question.

Ax will be running on Windows Server Standard in couple of virtual machines (VMs).

The question was, whether on the physical server I can run Windows Server Core?

    Thanks.

    Hi Wibni,

You can also search on the Technet forum for this question or create a new one:

    Hi

    I Think no.

    Look at technet.microsoft.com/.../dd184075.aspx

As say in the link above, on Windows Server Core is not available .NET Framework 3.0 features, Windows Powershell and others.

So in my opinion you cannot install AX.

    Regards

I don't see how any of your virtual machines would know or care about the OS of your hypervisor. Virtualization abstracts from these details; we merely require a hypervisor capable to run our VMs, regardless how the hypervisor is implemented or deployed. It's already happening with VMs in hostings and clouds.

Server core is actually recommended for Hyper-V. You can also switch between the Full and Server Core installation if you change your mind later.

By the way, there is good support for Powershell in Windows Server 2012 Server Core.

Thanks Martin. I think this is actually the correct answer and it makes sense too.

I wouldn't be able to safe on license cost I presume, since I need the VMs to be licensed anyway.

But at least I safe on hardware resources.
