Barcode integration in AX 2009 for Medical Retail

Hi

I need to integrate barcode system with AX for a medical retail company.

What is the standard code that should be used?

If an item has different dimension combinations, should we use different barcodes for every combination?

Is an interface necessary to integrate the barcode scanner with AX?

 Please clarify.Thanks.

The setup depends on the goals of the implementation.

Code 39 is a simply and good option if you are going to use the barcode labels inside the organization.

Barcode scanners usually have an interface supported by the operating system so AX can use them without a modification to AX itself.

As for dimension combinations - you would like to scan a barcode and allow AX to fully identify the item. Therefore you would need to include the dimension combinations in the barcode... the bar code setup form in AX allows you to assign a separate bar code to each item#/size/colour/configuration combination.

    Hi George

Thanks for your reply. Could you suggest me barcode scanners of which make (eg Motorolla / Intec) would be best suitable for AX 2009. The application is just at the POS.

    Thanka a lot

I don't think AX has a special preference for any make of barcode scanners. The best approach is to find a reliable barcode solution vendor with the right combination of prices, installation and support services. The vendor can recommend you barcode scanners taking into account the workplace environment, number of transactions, required performance, ease of use, interface to PC (USB would be the standard option, I guess), etc.

I am somewhat partial to Symbol scanners but that's just because I have too many friends using them.

    @George,

I want to start using barcodes also. The bar code readers won't be the problem for me. But more how to activate in AX and how the process flow is supported. Can you maybe help me by sharing your experience.

     1. An item is received from the vendor, but the barcode is not present yet in the system. Does AX have a way to activate/ identify and connect. I am thinking off my experience with rfid tags which where in garments in the past: we build software to 'marry' the tag with the garment (piece of close) so that every garment became unique. I am working with vendors having SAP and Tibco and a bit reluctant to integrate their software with ours.

    2. Item arrival: can goods be scanned and how to connect the correct purchase order with the items if many items are ordered over many purchase orders.

    3. Picking the item from stock at a picking location.

    4. Scanning at the packing location

    5. Maybe even integrate RMA's by scanning the customer number printed on the RMA document and/or invoice / packing glip and thus looking up a customer through the scanner.

    Hi,

Please refer the following blog post for steps to setup bar codes in Dynamics AX 2009.

    Hi Abdul,

Have you checked into GS1? - http://www.gs1.org/barcodes/implementation - I suggest taking a look at which particular standard you require for your product/s.

Regarding integrating with a scanner, if the device is required to work from a AX client on a remote workstation and send data back to the server, via the connected client session which could be in another state, have a look at any scanner that supports RS-232 communication and build an application in .Net that consumes System.IO.Ports - take a look at some of the examples, you could build a .Net client from the code examples (which are extensive) in very short work.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.ports.serialport.aspx

I previously built such a client for AX 3.0 with .Net and had the scanned value currently being held on the scanner transmitted to a .Net web service on the client machine, to which the bar-code scanner was attached. The client hosting the scanner, was also hosting the .Net web service and was accessible over the network from the AOS by IP address.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms933131.aspx

This way your AOS server could have multiple scanners, geographically placed  at different locations all running your .Net port based application which transmits current device values from the scanner and have your AOS collect the values from an array of connected devices, by finding the machines IP and requesting each machines web service method.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi All

I tried to integrate barcode for an item for a motorolla USB scanner. I completed the barcode setup in the basic module and also the barcode setup in Item Card > Setup > Barcode. I tried picking up the item details at the sales order level where I placed the cursor at the Item no field and scanned the barcode. Though the code was picked, it didnot match it with Item no but instead turned out a error message that Item not found. I think the system checks the barcode with Item no.

Please let me know how I can rectify the above problem. Thanks.

Set up the barcode value to match the Item number? That's what I always do in demo setups. Not sure if it's appropriate for production environments though.

    Hi

We have chosen symbol scanner and code 128 for barcodes. It scans fine. When I match the barcode with the item no, it brings details to sales order / Purchase Order form. I then tried creatng unique barcodes for item dimension combinations for a sample item. When I keep the cursor in the Item No field at SO / PO level, it does scan but returns error that Item No not found. I also tried placing the cursor in Barcode field, under others tab in lines of the PO / SO, but even then it didnt work.

Pls let me know if there is a better way of scanning barcodes for item - dimension combinations.

    Thanks a lot.
