Hi Everyone,

Can you tell me more about Project Item Journal?  I would like to know more about it's functionality and how it differs from other Item Journals.

Hope to hear from you the soonest.

Best regards,
Edmond

    Hi Andre,

Thank you for your advise.  I have copied it from a separate thread and forgot to remove the salutation.  This is noted.

    Best regards,

    Edmond

    Hi Edmond,

I would like to ask you to not create a question on the forum for one specific person. You started with 'Hi Ludwig', but there are a lot more volunteers who can help you. You have already noticed that Zvika did help you very good.

It would be better to create new posts for separate questions like Zvika also mentioned.

Please don't mark your own replies as helpful when you have asked questions. Only mark them when they contain your solution.

Yes, I totally agree but again I will raise my question regarding your answer "1. remove quantity of an item from inventory (just like a movement journal does)"

Is the project item journal only useful for inventory item not previously tagged to a project?

    RE: Project Item Journal

Purchase order linked to a project does 2 actions in 1.

It purchases inventory (hence bringing it into inventory) and immediately consumes that inventory into project cost (upon receipt).

so in effect it is equivalent to doing the following:

    1. "normal" purchase order receipt into inventory (adding to inventory)

2.. Project Item invoice to consume inventory into a project (removing from inventory).

As you can see the net inventory impact is 0.

    hi Zvika,

Can you elaborate on this please:

"The purpose of the Project Item Journal is to simulate the business scenario where a project is consuming inventory - either because something is built using the inventory as part of the project or because an inventory item is sold to a client through a billable project"

I understand that Project consumes inventory since it was used to built as part of the project and you have also mentioned that it is to:

"Record the cost of the item into a project (so create and post a project transaction)

The GL impact of that journal is:

    credit: inventory balance

debit: project item expense (as defined in the project module, Ledger Posting Setup)

I brought the project procurement part since it is a way to increase the inventory count but unfortunately, it is consumed fully upon product receipt.  Then how can you decrease the inventory when you have not yet increased it via project procurement?

    Regards,

    Edmond

I am not sure I fully understand the question, but it sounds like a separate and distinct question.

You are asking how a purchase order linked to a project can record increase in inventory on hand?

I would recommend you post it as a separate thread, and you can get a wider visibility to your question.

    hi Zvika,

I have another concern related to this though.  In Project, particularly in Inventory Management, how can we increase the quantity of the item if via purchase order receipt it will be fully consumed already?  This is the behavior of AX once purchased items are linked to a Project ID.

Let me hear your thoughts on this.

    Regards,

    Edmond

yes, you can also add (using negative number) however in the context of project module it does not make much sense.

The purpose of the Project Item Journal is to simulate the business scenario where a project is consuming inventory - either because something is built using the inventory as part of the project or because an inventory item is sold to a client through a billable project

If this answers your question please mark as such, so others can benefit from the answer,

Well, that is helpful.  Anyway, regarding #1, it is not just to remove, right? I mean we can also add, right?

Project item journal is used to do 2 things in a single step:

    1. remove quantity of an item from inventory (just like a movement journal does)

    2. Record the cost of the item into a project (so create and post a project transaction)

The GL impact of that journal is:

    credit: inventory balance

debit: project item expense (as defined in the project module, Ledger Posting Setup)
