Database backup and recovery strategies for CRM on premise

Hello,

Could you please tell me what you recommend for fully backing up and testing your CRM 2016 on premise databases in case of disaster recovery?

Do you set the recovery model to Full or Simple? How often do you back up the MDF vs LDF files? Full/partial/frequency, etc...

What steps do you take to ensure recent transactions have been properly saved and recovered?

All of the above could be considered normal SQL Server questions, but I would like to know the above in the context of the Dynamics CRM system. Anything extra? Anything besides the normal SQL Server steps?

Thanks

Half of the questions depend on your business RTO\RPO requirements and how much money it willing to burn on this.

Generic SQL Server backup strategies work just fine here IMO.

There's not much that's specific to CRM. A few things:

    • Almost all volatile data is in the organisation database(s). However, MSCRM_Config will change when you change deployment properties or add users
    • There's a relationship between the MSCRM_Config and organisation databases for systemuser records, so I'd always backup the databases at the same time
    • MSCRM_Config is deployment and server-specific. If the recovery is onto the same servers and deployments, you can restore MSCRM_Config. If you need to restore to a different server you're probably best importing the organisation databases

    Hi Rod,

There should not be really a difference between your Dynamics SQL Server disaster recovery plan and any other Business Critical Application SQL Server.

You can always rebuild a CRM/SQL Server and restore your SQL Backup and be up and running in a very short time.

    Hope this helps.
