Upgrade from 2015 to 2018.3

Posted on by 90

We are upgrading GP 2015 on our 2012r2 system with SQL Express 2014, to 2018.3 on a new Server.

I've been told by our reseller we need to downgrade win server 2019 to 2016 and SQL 2019 standard to 2017; anybody seen any problems with this path?

I think all us chief, cooks and bottle washers should form a union. I am glad to hear that this phrase is still used. I do upgrades all the time. We usually bring the data into our data center and it comes in as an old version and it goes out as a new version. All you need to do is have the new server in place. Sounds like you and I are about the same age so I would offer deep discounts for this service. Let us know how it goes. Feel free to send me a private message. Sounds like things are winding down for you too.

Richard, our servers are physical and identical and small (two T 340 Dells around 7 years old), as I understand, we can choose to upgrade each old server, move 4 companies from one of the old server and have only one old server with 11 small companies to upgraded or buy a new server. ---- We don't have any IT on sight and I'm retired and I haven't mention we also use a few MR reports on each server, we have gone from 4 accountants down to 2 and I always think the sky is about to fall ! I'll let you, Justin and Joe know what our finale choice is after I talk to our reseller and the owner. I appreciate all the suggestions/points.

Cleon, you can go all the way to GP 18.3.1245 with what you have. Once there you could upgrade SQL to SQL 2017 or 2019. If you are going to be going to a new server go with SQL 2019 on Windows 2019. When you are ready you can copy your databases off the W2012 R2 server to the new W2019 Server. Are your servers physical or image servers?

    Hi Cleon-

Personally, I'd go to SQL Server 2016. Then you've got that piece of it out of the way and is compatible with all of the versions from GP 2016 onwards. As for the Windows Server version, 2016 isn't that bad. We are running GP 18.3 on it just because we have some VBA customizations that haven't been moved to .net yet.

If you want to bounce anything off of me about this in the future, feel free.

    Thanks.

It's starting to look like the new server upgrade is going to be a Rabbit Hole for us. Our reseller's PM originally wanted to upgrade our old server, now I know why.

Thanks again Justin , Richard and Joseph

RE: Upgrade from 2015 to 2018.3

Just a side note. Justin is spot on. GP 18.x is the only version compatible with SQL 2019. However, GP 2015, GP 2016 and GP 18.3 are all compatible with SQL 2014. You will need to upgrade GP 2015 to GP 2016.00.0716 first and then upgrade to GP 18.3.1245. Now after you get to GP 18.3.1245 you could upgrade SQL. This is why in our data center we have images with various versions of SQL and GP. We can accommodate just about every upgrade path.

The new server upgrade idea is starting to look like a Rabbit Hole for us. The original upgrade our reseller PM suggested  was upgrading our old server. I'm now thinking the upgrade on the old server may be the safest/quickest solution for us, even though the 2012r2 Server software has only a little over 2 years of Microsoft support.

    Thanks Justin, Richard and Joseph

RE: Upgrade from 2015 to 2018.3

    Hello Cleon,

Your reseller is correct, you cannot go to GP 18.3 from GP 2015. Instead you would have to stop on either a GP 2016 or GP 2018 version (depending on your 2015 version).

Since both GP 2016 and GP 2018 do not support SQL 2019 (or Windows 2019), you will be unable to complete the upgrade on your new server.

That said, you can install a new instance on SQL on your old server, and use that as your "TEST" environment for the upgrade. You will just want to make sure that you are very clear with your ODBC names (don't want to upgrade Live, or post in Test), and make sure you keep your live version of GP installed when you install 2016 and/or 2018. This will only work, however, if you are not needing to upgrade 2015 prior to the upgrade.

    Thanks!

RE: Upgrade from 2015 to 2018.3

I've been told by our reseller that we can't upgrade GP2015 to GP2018 directly on a new server running 2019 Server without doing an intermediate  hop.  I think this is the problem we have, my main concern is a possible problem with downgrading the new Server software & SQL software.

Do you mean GP 18.3.x? GP 18.3 will run on W2019 and SQL Server 2019. The only caveat is that Analysis Cubes is no longer available for SQL 2019 so if they use that you cannot use SQL 2019.
