Edit .axpp files

Hi,

My company started very recently with a D365 Finance implementation, some I am fairly new to this.

From one of our vendors we received some .axpp files that should contain data entities to connect to their software. However, I need to make same changes to these files (add fields/columns). So my general question, how do I do this?

I've tried a few things a few things, hopefully you can confirm if I'm taking the right route or give me some guidance.

  • These files should be edited in Visual Studio.
    • Only possible in VS 2017/2019?
    • Professional/Enterprise subscription is necessary?
    • How do I create a 'Finance & Operations' project type in VS?
  • Can I edit these files in a local installation of VS?
    • If not, where should I edit them?
  • I've found Microsoft documentation about "Development tools": Development tools in Visual Studio - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn
    • How do I get these tools?
    • How do I install these tools?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I really don't know how to continue. Any direction regarding a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

You can't use a VS installed by yourself on your machine. Instead, you need to use a DEV VM pre-installed by Microsoft. You have two options: either you'll deploy a VM from LCS (Lifecycle Services) to Azure, or you'll download a VHD from LCS and set up a local VM in Hyper-V.

The environment comes with Visual Studio, including F&O tools, SQL Server, the standard F&O application, a configured web application for running F&O, a batch service, a data management service and so on and so on.

In VS, you'll be able to use Dynamics 365 > Import Project to import .axpp files.
