Budget Model naming for Management Reporter best practice

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

hi all,

I currently have budget models named by year (YE2016 etc) as per all general AX guidance, but this is not practical for use with Management Reporter.  You can only use your reports for the current year as the report is 'hard wired' to recall that years budget.  this means that all the reports need to be duplicated to account for different years.

see also previous post:

https://community.dynamics.com/ax/f/33/p/190747/533155#533155

I also have multiple companies which I think if I use the same Budget model name in each, the reporting tree selects the correct company budget at run time when choosing which company to run the report for. (a simple test worked ok).

Should I choose a generic name for my budget model (eg Operations) and use that for all companies, for all years?  Do new budget register entries get added to the same budget model every year?

Does this cause problems with managing the budget planning templates etc for each year ?(haven't used this part yet)

thanks

AXF

    Hello AXfinance,

If you do not like changing your MR reports you should go for the generic budget model option.

A differentiation of the budet amounts can be made by the date / year you refer to in Management Reporter when generating the report.

If you only work with a single budget model, new entries will get added to that one but can be separated by the date the budget register entry is recorded.

Also note that you can setup budget codes that refer to a specific year such as Original2016, Original2017 in order to differentiate between the different years.  Making the etup this way basically flips the setup Microsoft ships all demo companies with.

Unfortunately, I have no best practice Guideline from MS available on this and would thus suggest that you wait for other community member to respond to get different views on that issue. Based on that you can do some testing and decide what fits best for you.

    Hope this helps,

    Ludwig

Thanks Ludwig, using the budget code is a good idea.  Would be interested to see how others use the models/codes too.

    Hi Dr. Ludwig.

Where is the parameter in D365FO Financial Reports / Management Reporter to be able to designate a Budget Code? I would like to use it.  Thanks.

Hello G-Squared, This functionality seems to be gone and lo longer available. I would recommend that you get into contact with the MS support directly to get a definitive answer. Best regards, Ludwig
