AX in relation to upgrade Windows Server OS

We are currently on AX 2012 R2 CU7 and are going to upgrade the Windows OS (we do not have time to upgrade to AX 2012 R3 before upgrading the OS).  The upgrade will be from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2.

I believe the correct sequence of steps is as follows (trying everything out in a DEV environment first).

 1. Take DB backups of AX and take a VM snapshot of the server
These are for recovery purposes, in case something goes wrong.
2. Uninstall AX
If AX needs to be uninstalled, might as well do it while the registry still has the correct information for the current install of AX.
3. Install the new OS (preferably a fresh install, not an in-place upgrade)
This would overwrite, delete, or otherwise cause issues with registry entries for AX.
4. Reinstall AX

Is the above correct?  Any tips or shortcuts?

    Hi Rick,

In general, the steps are OK. To be more complete, I would first stop the AOS service(s). Are you also going to upgrade Windows OS for the database server? Or do you have the DB and AOS on the same server (not recommended at least not for production)?

Just before reinstall AX, you have to ensure the databases are running.

Make sure you are using a supported scenario for AX 2012. You can download the system requirements guide to check it: www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    Thanks, Andre.

I'm clear on shutting down the AOS, the DB and AOS are on different servers, the OS will be updating on both servers, and I had already made sure that AX 2012 R2 CU7 can be run on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I was mostly unclear on whether or not AX had to be uninstalled and then re-installed.  Uninstall/reinstall seems like a huge hassle and was hoping it didn't need to be done.
