Standards: Media panel Image size and resolution for Guides Steps

Hello Community!

Our each Guides module involves an average of 50 images for media panel content. All of them are photos converted to JPEG/PNGs.

The microsoft documentation shows 854x480 resolution for an MP4 video. Should we maintain same aspect ratio for the images too?

Using JPEGs instead of PNGs saved us roughly 40MB file size for ~60 images.
We would like to know more about "best performant" approach for
image format, size, resolution & compression.

Thank you.

Standards: Media panel Image size and resolution for Guides Steps
Maintain image size at 1024 x 576, use JPEG for photos, and PNG for illustrations.
Optimize both formats for efficient compression to reduce file sizes. Given the display limitations, the difference in DPI might not significantly impact runtime memory.
Refer to Microsoft's documentation for comprehensive guidelines on supported file formats and best practices within Dynamics 365 Guides.
Pro tip: You can use online tool such as this online jpeg compressor its supports formats is JPEG, JPG, PNG, SVG, WEBP, GIF, and Heic.

Thank you Stephen, this is much useful!

Since we moved from other game engine platform, we are trying to understand more about how Guides engine works. This will help us implement large complex procedure modules efficiently.

Hi, if you import images using the Guides PC tool then the images will always be automatically resized to a maximum of 1024 x 576 for display on Hololens regardless of the original image DPI.

JPG is a better choice for photographic images and PNG is generally a better choice for illustrations with large blocks of solid color as those two formats are optimized for different scenarios and will result in smaller file sizes for storing in DataVerse and faster downloading to the Hololens. You can see the actual size of the uploaded files by looking in the Dynamics portal for Guides.

However both formats will use exactly the same amount of memory on the Hololens when you come to load the guide.

    Hope that helps,

    Stephen

    Hi Nya,

    Thanks for sharing the references!

Problem is that we always end up with huge assets with multiple steps. In our case, images play important role since we use them in high volume.

Would a 72dpi image consume less runtime memory than a 96/150 dpi image?

Will 854x480 scale better with less memory than a 1080p?

We would like to know which image format & compression type will perform better.

Please help us in choosing the "best performant" approach for media panel images.
