Dynamics 365 for Marketing Licensing - Can users with only a Dynamics 365 for Marketing license, without any additional licenses, create accounts, create contacts, and read all custom entities?

Hello everyone !

I'm looking for clarification on the capabilities of users who are assigned a Dynamics 365 for Marketing license, specifically without any additional licenses. I would like to know if these users have the authority to create new accounts and contacts within the system, as well as have read access to all custom entities. If anyone has insights or experience regarding the specific permissions and limitations for users with solely a Dynamics 365 for Marketing license, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Hope you are well.

Yes, users with only a Dynamics 365 for Marketing license, without any additional licenses, can create accounts, create contacts, and read all custom entities.

Users who have only a Dynamics 365 for Marketing license without any additional licenses can create an environment which category is Build apps with Dataverse.

Access the environment which category is Build apps with Dataverse, users can create accounts, create contacts, and read all custom entities that environment's owner created in environment.

Dynamics 365 license like Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Marketing and so on includes Power Apps use rights, along with other Dynamics and Power Platform use rights. User with Dynamics 365 license has the right to create the environment with dataverse, create and edit tables.

Thank you for the quick answer. Can we consider your answer for an official statement ?

About the licence assigned ot the David So user :

The Dynamics 365 Marketing business edition is not related to Dynamics for Marketing module : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/marketing/overview but more the old extension for Dynamics for Sales.

So I would like to make sure we are talking about the same module : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/marketing/overview which is based on a tenant level licensing.

Actually the documentation does not (or we did not find) mention the fact that custom entities records can be read by Marketing team owning only a Dynamics 365 for Marketing. And it seems the Licensing guide does not mention the licence capability neither.

Did you get any experience with this kind of licensing question ? This seems pretty strange that no clear documentation on the licensing for Marketing exists in the documentation. for exemple, the following questions has been raised:

Considering the only licence available on the tenant level is Dynamics for Marketing and the Marketing module has been enabled on an environment is it possible to :

- Create a new hub with several custom entities and allows access to them to Marketing users ?

- Are the Marketing users constraint to use only the Marketing hub?

- Can the Marketing users use the outlook connector?

- How many custom entities can be embedded in the Marketing Hub site map ?

- Can the user write / update / append / Append to other records ? For exemple a new custom entity created specifically for the business of the customer?

If you have any insights, answer, experiences, ... related to these topics, we will grateful you share them with us

Based on your question, I will explain as follows:

1. Create a new hub with several custom entities and allows access to them to Marketing users?

Yes, we can, provided that the Marketing users are assigned sufficient permissions to new hub and custom entities.

2. Are the Marketing users constraint to use only the Marketing hub?

Actually not, Marketing users have permission to read model-driven apps. If other apps are shared to Marketing users, which created in the environment contains Marketing hub, they will have access to read these apps.

3. Can the Marketing users use the outlook connector?

I'm afraid it is not available for Marketing users to use the outlook connector.

4. How many custom entities can be embedded in the Marketing Hub site map?

There is no limit on custom entities embedded in the Marketing Hub site map. However, if you have Dynamics 365 Team Members license, while customizing the app, you can add 15 additional entities.

5. Can the user write / update / append / Append to other records? For exemple a new custom entity created specifically for the business of the customer?

Yes, we can add user into the security role and then assign create/ update / append / Append permissions to them of the custom entity.

Thank you for these detailed explanations. But as you maybe now, this is not because you can allow whatever you want in the Dynamics Platform and Security Roles that it's compliant with Licensing Capabilities :). And that's exactly the point I would like to be confirmed.

I understand that technically end users can be granted to use any hub or any custom entities.

But If I read between the lines, I can purchase a Dynamics for Marketing Licence (+/- 1.5k € / month) which allows all users (What ever the number) of a production instance to use :

- All base Dataverse entities : Account / Contact / Activities

- All Marketing activities : Email template, Journey

- All Custom entities

- All Hub (excepts those related to a Dynamics 365 App as Sales or Customer Service ?)

- All Mobile Apps

- For the outlook connector, Marketing users need to get an PowerApps / App licence

This is interesting and based on this other ideas are popping up:

- Does the Dynamics for Marketing allows AI Credit such as the Business Card Reading ?

- Can they use a Canvas App and / or Power Automate with premium connector if it's connected to one the entities related the Marketing Dataverse environment ? (Such it's extend the base feature)

- Is there any other features that Dynamics For Marketing allows ?
