manually enter serial number in AX 2012

Posted on by 5,990

We use AX 2012 FP.we need to enter serial number manually for the finished good items with a prefix say "AB-" followed by 4 digits.  Say for a qty of 5,  AX allow us to enter starting number say 1001 and it populates the ending number. I see the format box but AX doesn't allow us to enter any prefix?  however, I can use auto-serial number with a number sequence. But auto-serial doesn't work for us. We need to enter serial number manually with a Alpha - Numeric style. Is this possible.

I created a serial number group and ticked manual and also ticked number sequence. During the Report as Finished and in the registration, I could only enter the numeric digits. Is this by design and how can I get around this.

Appreciate your inputs

In teh update registrations screen simply use the create serial number twice, to create teh two, post then RAF.

I would not put the serial numbe on the sales line as this restricts the process in my eyes, but it does depend upon the requirements and process in the end.

Thanks Weaveriski. So during RAF,  could we be able to create the serial numbers say "AB-1001" and AB-1004 for two items being RAF?  because, AX shows us to Create Serial number window with start and end  numbers.  But we want to input serial numbers that are not sequential?  So probably we need to RAF one item at a time?

Or, could we be able to generate the Serial Number when creating the SO - that we way we can assign the serials to all items and then when we are RAF, we can pick the serials as Items are produced  - these items then can be shipped with correct serial numbers.  Is this possible to a) create serial numbers at the time when a SO is created?

I would not use the number group, I would either ensure that the numbers externally generated are reflected in the update registrations using the create serial number option, or get the external software to populate this area against the works order.

The settings in Inventory and warehouse management>Setup>Dimensions>Number groups control when the serial numbers are generated. In the Allocation group of this form, selecting "Only for inventory transactions" = Yes and "On phsyical update" = No will generate the serial numbers for each unit in advance, when the production order is estimated. When posting the RAF journal use Inventory>Registration to select the serial numbers being completed. That is, the serial number range for the production might be AB-1001 thru AB-1201 for two hundred units, but by using inventory registration, individual serial numbers can be selected to be posted. This setup will also reduce clerical/data entry errors.

    Hi

None of that is an issue. You simply RAF the quantity you define and you only create the serial numbers you want to RAF in AX. Just make sure on the RAF you do not select "End Job" until you have reported all.

The packing slip is also no issue. If you were to pick and tick the reservation it would select them (if they were available and in stock) or you could define them in the pick list registration, or if you jump straight to packing slip you simply define them there.

There are no problems with what you are trying to do as standard.

Thanks and this helps.  In our case, we use an internal software that generate the S/L. we create them before items are produced.  Though we have a  sequence but we wouldn't know which one has been produced first. Say AB-1001 through AB-1005.  In the shop floor, we may have AB-1005 and AB-1004 produced first and the rest in progress. Often, customer require use to ship those two items first.

From what I understand, AX creates serial number at the Report as finished RAF stage.  We thought perhaps, RAF for 1 item and enter the serial number, RAF another QTY and enter the serial Number (I am not sure if AX will allow to report as item is finished).

We are not sure how could we packing slip these two items in AX matching the serial number!  Appreciate any input on this.

You can enter them with a prefix using the format box. Assumign this is production you have already located the update registrations screen. Then select the create serial number button. In the format put AB-100# this will then create 1 for each #, so AB-1001, AB-1002, AB-1003, AB-1004 and AB-1005 for a start 1 and end 5.
