How to identify hotfix changes

Hello:
I completed installation of a AX hotfix into one of our test environment. This was obviously a MS hotfix. I'm trying to figure out what changes were made which resolved our issue. We're on 2012R2 CU7 so we already have changes on the SYP layer. I tried taking an export from another test environment of the SYP layer for the object in the documentation. The comparison didn't show any changes. We're still in the midst of testing the change.
Thank you.

    Hi DHeisman,

Sometimes the documentation about changed objects are not complete. You have to find all objects belonging to the hotfix model(s) which was installed.

Before installing the hotfix you can also run the update analysis.

    Hi DHeisman,

As Andre mentioned, hotfix will create new model that contains all the changes.

You can go to tools -> model management and use "create project from model" option to create new project that will contain all changes releated to this hotfix.

Please note that one hotfix could include multiple models.

After that you can use compare tool to find chnages that were introduced by HF.

You may have two types of hotfixes: application/database and binary (or the combination of the two).

The application hotfix usually goes in the SYP layer, and typically creates a model file as mentioned by Andre as well. You may find it in the developer AX client > Tools menu > Model management > Models installed.

Since AX has a lot of code running in the kernel and in DLL files, it is very likely that the changes are coming as binary hotfixes. In this case the version in the file properties would show different, but you would not be able to see what has been compiled. Unless you decompile it to understand better, but that is a different story alltogether since that probably violates license agreements.

I work in the CUS layer, do I need to be in a specific layer prior to creating the project from the model? Right now I'm not seeing the differences in the compare between the CUS (where we have custom changes) and the SYP layers. Thanks in advance.

    Hey DHeisman,

If you are creating project from a model on CUS layer it will create new project on CUS layer so it's ok.

To find changes you need to compare sys and syp not syp and cus

    ievgen,

We've applied several CUs throughout the years, and perhaps we missed a step at some point but all the changes are in SYP. If I compare SYS and SYP, I'm not able to identify the changes specific to this HF. I have other test environments which have not had the HF applied yet, so can I take an export of the object(s) identified in the HF documentation and compare it against one of the other environments? If so, I would need to have a configuration file which starts up in SYP to be able to get the proper layer changes?

    Thank you!

    Hi DHeisman,

As I mentioned in my initial post each HF belongs to a model so if you will enable "show model in AOT" parameter in option:

    5734.Untitled.png

you will be able to see changes introduced by this model in AOT:

    6406.Untitled3.png

No you can build project from this model to see all objects that were changed:

    5758.Untitled1.png

Using compare tool you can compare sys and syp to find what exactly was changed:

    5734.Untitled.png

Now, you can export this project to another environment and compare using compare tool with existing code.

Please note that you can have multiple changes introduced by different HF so looking at method's model in AOT you can get idea what HF made this changes.

Did you actually verify what I just posted above, whether you have a hotfix listed in there as a model?

If not then it is very likely that it just contained a binary hotfix.

If you know your KB number for the hotfix, you could also open LifeCycle Services, search for the KB and in most of the cases Microsoft shows you exactly what has been changed.

You can get the installed hotfix list from 'Show installed models' and by referring KB# you can check further.
