Hi Experts
The Work Order numbers are unique as they are getting generated I think from an OOB plugin. Anyway, my question is, right now, we do not have any prefix for the Work Orders and our first work order is created as with the number 00001
Does this mean that it will only be able to create maximum 99999 Work Orders? Or it will automatically increase when it reaches to that number and rename the previous ones?
Looking forward to learn about this.
Thanks
Arafat
Thanks for such a great clarification. Cheers!
Hi Arafat,
Yes, Work Order Number(msdyn_name) is not auto number type, which will be filled with the value from the Auto-Numbering (msdyn_autonumbering) field.
In general, 99999 is not maximum and previous (00001 to 99999) records will not be affected, they can’t be changed to (000001 to 099999), just new record will add one digits in work order number field, it will begin with 100000.
If you worry about that the 100000 record can’t extend value, you can set work order number field as your need when work order already has 99999 records.
1.Navigate to ‘Field Service Setting’ area.
2.click on ‘Opt-In to Auto-Numbering’ button on ribbon bar.
3.Next click on ‘Opt-In’ button to proceed, then click on ‘Yes, proceed with opt-in’ button.
4.Click on ‘# Auto Numbering’ button to enable the auto numbering for Work Order entity.
5.Test.
Go Work Order entity to create a new record, you will see following:
The new record begins with 100000 value and previous records not be affected.

Hi Leah Ju
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, Work Order Number is a TEXT field and I believe it behaves a little different than this out of the box Auto Number type.
Therefore, I want to be sure if it's going to restrict if not then what will happen to the previous ones (00001 to 99999) which might have been created. Will they be changed to (000001 to 099999)?
Hi Arafat,
No, 99999 is not the maximum for the work order, It can extend range automatically.
To verify it. I ran a test on a custom entity. As following shown, I set the auto-number field with 1 digital, which means maximum is 9.
When I click ! icon behind ‘Mininum number of digitals’, it means it can extends the range automatically.
When I create 10th record, it still can create successfully and fill auto-number field with 2 digital.
The value of MIN_LENGTH is between 1 and 6, so in your example, the field can automatically increase when it reaches to that number.
