GP Web Service Options

I am a GP newbie trying to develop a (non-Microsoft) web client to integrate to a GP web service. What are my options for out-of-the-box web service integration on the GP side and what GP modules do I need to purchase for each option (SOAP, REST, etc.)

I am disappointed that Microsoft does not trouble to search for and answer simple questions that remain unanswered on this forum after several days. How lame is that?
