How to add a new column to a standard SSRS report?

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

Hi,

I have a requirement for adding a column in standard report PSAProjInvoice report.

I have created an extension of temporary table PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp and added a new field XXX.

Now that new field does not reflect on the dataset in the report even after restoring or refreshing.

Is there any other way to add the column on the report as we are adding it on extension of the temporary table?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately SSRS report don't support extensions. You can create a new report and use it instead of the original one, though. Menu item extensions will help you to redirect menu items to your new report.

    Thanks Martin.

Interestingly, I am now able to see the field created in extension table in the dataset after placing the extension table in a model which  references Application Suite model. However, I am not sure if this is the right approach. Can you suggest me if this is right way?

I don't understand what you did. PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp is defined in Application Suite, so if you didn't have a reference to this package, any code referring to PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp wouldn't even compile.

Well... As I mentioned on the initial post about the requirement to add a column to the report. Now, PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp  has been used in the report PSAProjInvoice to fetch the data. I had to add a field to this table. Hence, I have created an extension of PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp and added a new field.

When I checked the report dataset property in Visual Studio and tried to add that field on the report, I noticed the new field was not listed in the field list from where I was supposed to select and add the field.

PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp is in Application Suite, but PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp.Extension was created in another model which was not part of Application Suite package.

As I did no change in the code, there is no question of compile error here.

Later, I have just placed PSAProjInvoiceHeaderTmp.Extension into another model which is part of Application Suite package and the new field was visible and could be selected for adding it to the dataset.

Aha, that's different information than before (model which is part of Application Suite package vs. model which references Application Suite model). Now you've changed the Application Suite package directly, instead of extending it by another package.

Note that Application Suite will be locked next year (and the not-yet-locked version will be supported for two years), therefore it's not an urgent problem, but it's important to realize that your design won't work in long term and you'll have to switch to a custom package at some point.
