Dear 

Where would you recommend i place the Item Bar code number in the Item Inventory Card. The Bar Code in this case is different from my Item Number. 

I am looking for a field in the Item Cards that is User defined so i can place use it, your suggestion is appreciated

    Hello Abdo

    You can consider one of three options to store the item Barcode depending on the length of Barcode, these options could be:

    • Item Description | 100 characters
    • Item Short Description |  15 characters
    • Item Generic Description |  10 characters


    In case you do have a description, you can consider a specific criteria to store both item description and barcode, When pulling your item barcode, you consider the separator in your SQL code to omit the description part. For instance

    • (Item Description - Barcode) : (HSC 2 Expansion Slot  - 00012030302098884)


    My own recommendation though would go for short description, since 15 characters can supposedly cover your requirements.

    I would recommend you to use the "Item Short Description" field for your item Barcode consist within 15 characters. Otherwise, you can use "Item Description" field to store the Barcode value with an unique identifier(eg: separator - as Mahmoud AlSaadi said).

    Along the same lines of Somakarpagamoorthy, I have implemented in the past using Short Description, then using Smartfill from Rockton Software I make the short description one of the searchable fields to return the item on the document after it was scanned with the barcode reader.  Very simple and not very expensive solution.

    Hi Abdo,

    I see your question is answered, but I would like to suggest another answer. I use the Item Code for my barcode. It's a 15 character field and is not currently visible on the window. You can use Modifier to show it and if you put a value in it, it will be saved to the Item Master table. The Item Code field has been a good 'go to' field for me for many years.

    Absolutely distinctive and unique suggestion.

    I would personally change my mind to favor this field over others in future implementations.

    I'll throw another idea in the basket, along with the excellent suggestions so far.  I've seen the Internet Addresses fields used to store bar code data.  There are at least eight fields on that card you could store bar codes in, including the Additional Info field, which will store up to 32k data.

    Great idea Frank. Why I prefer the Item Code is that I can display it directly on the Item Maintenance window.

    Thank you for your reply , although all the above would indeed work, unfortunately i am using the Short and the generic description.

    suppose if i upload the Bar code to the master table(as you suggested) without necessary showing it (license issues with the modifier) i would reach the same result ...right? Then i could query the bar code whenever needed. Only downside would be, no direct end user intervention. Am i on the right track or are there constraints?
