After Windows Security updates an Access Denied error message pops up when using Dynamics NAV Web Client via Internet Explorer

Hello,

You may not be able to logon to the Dynamics NAV  WebClient with Internet Explorer  after you installed a Windows 10 Security hot fix as described in KB4487044 on your Windows 10 device. We are aware of the issue and we are trying to resolve the scenario. While we are working on it to mitigate the scenario, there is no need to contact Microsoft CSS.

The following will be shown on the browser:

8585.ie.PNG

Other browsers like Chrome, Edge are not affected.

The error in the application event log file does show the following:
Error accessing Website Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 Web Client
Raw Url: /DynamicsNAV100/WebClient/logerror
Url: https://<<navserverinstance>>:port/<<dynamicsnavinstance>>/WebClient/logerror

When we do know more, we will post it.

UPDATE:

Universal App is not affected. Here we are using Edge WebView.
Dynamics NAV 2018 and later releases are not affected

Thank you.

After installing KB4486553 and KB4482887 on Windows 10, it seems to work again

Yes, but it also solves the Access Denied error although it isn't mentioned in the KB article. Just tested it on a Windows 2012 R2 server. After installing this update I'm able to logon to the webclient again when using IE from that server.

    Hello,

That KB does resolve the rendering of images or as per the KB:

Internet Explorer cannot load images that have a backslash (\) in their relative sources path

    Thanks.

KB4491113 solves the access denied issue, but is only available for IE versions distributed with Windows 8.1 / Windows Server 2012 R2 and lower. There's no update for Windows 10 / Windows Server 2016 and higher.

Will this update also be available for the latest Windows OS versions?

RE: After Windows Security updates an Access Denied error message pops up when using Dynamics NAV Web Client via Internet Explorer

It is often a grey area - is the problem in IE in NAV.

It is clearly because of a change in IE. Some feature or method was possible or allowed before, and not it isn't.

NAV2017 and older NAV versions used (or abused) this, and are now affected.

Since NAV2018 isn't affected, it seems Microsoft long ago found out they shouldn't use this "thing" and changed it.

But since Microsoft (as always) are completely hiding any facts about the actual issue, we have no idea if we could risk future versions of Chrome or Edge or Safari or Firefox etc also decide to disable this "thing". Or was this specific "thing" only used by the web-client, when viewed in IE and not in other browsers?

The funny part is, that we are now switching more and more to web-clients from the Windows client to get rid of local fat clients. This example just shows how fragile it can be.

If in doubt: Yes, I really hate the way Microsoft hides all information about the fixes they make in CUs :-(

It should be an IE issue because  Dynamics CRM for Sales product family also have been affected by the same issue.

    Hi

fine with NAV CU update, legacy NAV with old CU is a huge security issue.

But again, is this an IE issue or a NAV issue ??????????

RE: After Windows Security updates an Access Denied error message pops up when using Dynamics NAV Web Client via Internet Explorer

    Hi,

So it will not be fixed with a hotfix for Internet Explorer? We are using an application built in NAV 2017 and our supplier doesn't support cumulative updates of NAV since that will break their application. So we can't install any CU. Together with the Chrome upload issue we now have a non-working NAV portal for our customers which frustrates our business big time.

RE: After Windows Security updates an Access Denied error message pops up when using Dynamics NAV Web Client via Internet Explorer

    Hi,

The updated patch that came out on 19/2 (rendering of images) will resolve that specific issue and only on the listed OS'es in the KB. For Dynamics NAV, we expect that the next CU will contain the update that will resolve the Access Denied error message on the affected Dynamics NAV releases prior to Dynamics NAV 2018.

Hope it does clear all the confusion.

    Hi,

so do we need the cumulative update for NAV, or the update for IE? Or both?

KB4486474 isn't available for Windows 10 on the windows update catalog, with Windows 10 fully patched it still doesn't work.
