Pretty new to Dynamics 365 for Marketing and wanted to clarify 2 things.
1. Is the only way to send a "marketing email" through a customer journey? We mainly just want to use this for announcements and it would be super simple, but wanted to see if I was missing something.
2. When sending an email through a customer journey, will it appear on the timeline of the contacts it is being sent to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Marketing emails display OOTB under the Insights tab. No need for a custom activity.
You can view the timeline from a Customer, Email or Customer journey point of view.
You are correct. A marketing email can only be sent using a customer journey.
If you are using Sales Hub, you can send emails using "quick campaigns" to a marketing list.
I will add that the release roadmap has a 'quick send' feature planned for December of this year. docs.microsoft.com/.../quick-send
Marketing emails should update the contact timeline.

As far as adding an activity to the timeline, do you have any additional detail? When I go to add an activity, I don't see the option to include the email. I'm hoping this is because it already puts it on there?
Yes, my understanding is the only way to send a Marketing email is through a Customer Journey:
You can still send emails through marketing lists/campaigns but they are not marketing emails.
You can view emails sent to the contact by going to the contact record > Insights > Email Interactions and there is a timeline. Otherwise, I think you can add an activity in your journey to update the timeline that appears on the contact record. Hope this helps!
