Have anyone come across a scenario where Project Stage in D365FO need to be updated as per the incoming transactions? The field is non editable and there must be some reason behind it. I just want to confirm the possible implications before extending the table and making it editable. Any better alternative?

The project stage is changes by a special button that allows you selecting the project stage needed.

The reason for this is that there is validation and additional logic executed when changing the status. It could e.g. ask to update the status of sub-projects as well. Depending n the new status, it would also check open transactions to be finalized before closing a project.
Like Ludwig mentioned, this is all managed via the button available on the form.
I understand your point Andre, but what if D365 is trying to match the project status based on a legacy system. Receiving an extract from the other system with the Project IDs and Status and need to update the same in D365.
What can we do?
I can understand that another application should take the lead. Are you intending to use the Data Management Framework or another tool/option for the integration?
It can be through data management or even through Connectivity Studio. Any suggestion about best options to mitigate this?
With data management, you will probably have to create a new data entity to change the status and then ensure logic will be called to simulate the same logic as you would change the status via the user interface.
With Connectivity Studio, you can directly configure the update on the status field, but like mentioned above, you need to be sure there will be no impact if you bypass certain logic. You can add another extension class with additional validation logic.
