Is Analytics Workspace pointing to Data Lake already available ?

Hello everyone,

Just want to confirm, if we enable Data Lake Integration, as I understand, Aggregate Measurement will no longer updated to AXDW Entity Store instead it will be pushed to Data Lake. This is correct, right?

And 2nd, once it did, means at this moment, the current Analytic Workspace such as Credit & Collection, Financial Analysis, will no longer works or at least the data will be outdated, since the feature from Microsoft for automatically point to ADLS is not yet available, this is what my understanding from this document :

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/data-entities/azure-data-lake-overview

especially on this paragraph (in red color)

Aggregate measurements will be available in the data lake instead of Entity store. If you're using ready-made analytical workspaces that were built by using Entity store, they will be pointed to Data Lake in an upcoming monthly service update. The Microsoft service team will notify you when your Entity store is ready for the transition to Data Lake. You won't have to modify the reports themselves. Therefore, no development work will be required.

Kindly advise as this is quite confusing but we're urgently required some confirmation.

Thanks in advance,

    Hi Tony,

It is not completed yet. The table data available in the Data lake is now in preview and will be extended to all Azure regions first. This is planned for March 2021. After this exercise, Microsoft can continue with the full transitioning plan.

    Thanks for confirming, Andre

    Hi Andre,

Btw, it is true that after we enabled Data Lake integration, the current Analytic Workspace will then outdated, right?

Since the data will be pushed to Data Lake instead, the AxDW in not updated anymore.

    Thanks,

There will be a transition of data from the entity store to data lake. I do assume the migration will be seamless without losing data on the analytical workspaces.

I'm sorry, can you help to elaborate what "transition" does it mean ?

Because we did a quick test to enable Data Lake Integration and it did push through our to Data Lake. Then we try to add new data, then again Refresh Entity Store from the same menu, Data Lake is updated while AxDW not.

If there is a transition and no losing data, doesn't it mean "pointing to Data Lake" is available already ?

Sorry, but this is what makes us really confuse right now.

    Thanks,

    Hi Tony,

I was referring to the last part of the link you shared: docs.microsoft.com/.../azure-data-lake-overview. This is about planning the transition. This is at least valid for out of the box analytical workspaces. I'm not sure what exactly you are testing now.

    Hi Andre,

Yes, it is my understanding also, that it is not available now.

My testing is as mentioned, we enabled Data Lake integration, then Refresh Entity Store, the data went to Data Lake as we setup. We try to add new record in Aggregate Measurement that we use for that testing and then Refresh Entity Store again, it did update to Data Lake, but not Entity Store in AxDW.

Up to here I think we already have same conclusion, and as Entity Store in AxDW not updated anymore, the Analytics Workspace (as it is still pointing to AxDW) to my understanding will not be useful because outdated.

Understand about plan and the transition in the future, but what I need to confirm is that, at this moment, we cannot use Analytics Workspace since now the updated Aggregate Measurement or 'entity store' is on Data Lake. So it is more on "this present day" when Integration to Data Lake enabled, current Analytics workspace is not working by means the data is wrong.

Of course, again, in the future, it will.

    Thanks,

    Hi Tony ,

If you want your current analytical workspace working , you shouldn't be pushing your data to data lake or enable new integration  till the time its fully released. Pushing your entity store to data lake is a part of the transition phase where in you should be able to  just point your workspaces to data lake and eventually go away from entity store.

    Hi Sukrut,

    Noted, Thanks for confirming that.

    Hi Tony,

You can test the Data Lake integration, but not test how existing entity store will be moved to the Data Lake. The preview is very useful to get started and learn other related technologies such as Apache Spark and Azure Synapse.
