Product Categories and Procurement Categories

Dear Champions,

For a new Released Product , I need to link directly to Category. For this I navigate to

Action Pane PRODUCT > Group SET UP > PRODUCT CATEGORIES

1.01.png

This displays the categories as below

1.1.png

However, my actual categories are as defined in Procurement and Sourcing > Consignment > Procurement Categories

1.12.png

However, I noticed that if I add Procurement Category, it will reflect as product category.

Could you please help me figure out the USE CASE of having Product Categories & Procurement Categories? Also, let me know the best practice in using them.

Many Thanks,

Sarath Pillai

I have the same question (0)

RE: Product Categories and Procurement Categories

    Hi Sarath,

The category hierarchy for the product in the second screenshot is actually connected to product category (such as Procurement Category Type, Sales Category Type, Commodity Code).

Therefore, linking item to Category in released product form will have same result as adding products directly in specific category hierarchy (Category hierarchies --> Procurement-Product Master-->Project_T1).

The computer components is the name for category hierarchy of product master which can be modified. And the category hierarchy is still product master. So it displayed in the Drop-down box for product category.

RE: Product Categories and Procurement Categories

    Dear QianQW,

Thanks for your response. I totally agree with your explanation.

However, one question persist in this regards, for which I am not able to conclude.

     1.99.png

Q1 - When I add ‘Product Categories’, why am I able to see multiple categories (in RED box) where as my primary category is Product Master (in GREEN box)? Note that I added multiple categories for illustration purpose only.

Q2 - For all my Purchasing Policies, Purchase Requisition, PO, Purchase Agreements etc, I am able to view only category is Product Master (in GREEN box). Why is it so? How do I activate the others as well?

Q3 – As best practice, what would the ideal way of categorizing the products? I know that the structure varies from business to business. But, I am keen to know how in D365 it must be configured.

    Best Regards,

    Sarath

RE: Product Categories and Procurement Categories

    Hi Sarath,

A1: Because you are setting the product category and a product can be added to multiple categories, which used for other purposes. Product Master is the one of the all category hierarchy type(please view all categories hierarchy have been created under the path: Product information management > Setup > Categories and attributes > Category hierarchy role associations)

A2: Why do you want to see other category? The procurement category you can use only is Product Master. Others are used for sales or compliance and customs purpose. If you want to apply different categories to different department. Try to use the procurement catalogs to limit the access.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../about-category-hierarchies

A3: It is just set by each company and there is no unified operation.

    regards,

    QianQW

only cattegory hierarchy which is associated to type 'Procurement internal control' can be used in procurement policies, others are good for reporting purpose and attributes

    Hi Rahul,

Do you mean 'Category Hierarchy Type' should be  'Procurement Category hierarchy' in order to be affected by Procurement Policy?
