Deferral Schedule Update not Reflecting in Journal Entries

I am trying to post a purchase invoice with an expense deferral line.  The invoice is from November 2024 and I want to defer the expense over January through December 2025.  When I look at the deferral schedule, it shows the deferral being spread across December 2024 to November 2025.  Therefore, I changed the start date to 01/01/2025 and clicked recalculate.  It shows the correct entries on the deferral schedule.  However, when I preview posting, the entries are made for December 2024 through November 2025 still.  How do I get the entries to update to match the deferral schedule?

    Hello,

I have created a similar scenario as you have described and I'm able to achieve the results you are looking for.

Here is my sample for your records:
PO created as bellow with Posting Date set as 11/30/2024

    Deferral Schedule set as bellow

Looking at G/L Entries Preview, I am able to get Scheduled Deferral posting for 12 Periods, Starting on January 2025 and ending on December 2025.

Hope this can help you to move forward.

    Kind regards,
    Carmen Nunes

This is strange, I tried to recreate the issue and it works fine for me. I would try deleting the line and re-adding in on the order and see if that changes anything.

Okay, so it took me a while and several support cases but I finally figured it out. (FYI it was also the reason why I’ve been having problems with my use tax calculations on purchase invoices.) I was trying to use an allocation account for these entries. Allocation accounts are, according to Microsoft, “by design” not compatible with deferrals. They are also not compatible with use tax calculations “by design”. The only work around is to post the entry with the allocation and without the deferral. Then go back and make an entry for the deferral using general journals.

This usually happens because after updating the deferral schedule and clicking Recalculate, the changes aren’t saved unless you also click OK to confirm and update the schedule.

    To fix it:

✅ After recalculating the deferral with the correct start date, make sure to click OK on the Deferral Schedule page to save the changes.
Then, the updated deferral plan will reflect in the journal entries when posting or previewing.

Let me know if you still see the old schedule after that.

✅ Mark this answer as verified if it helps you.
