SQL Backup Versus Nav Back up

I have a strange issue with a client.

When running a full NAV backup we do not feel we are getting a clean backup as a couple of times it has created six files but on the restore to the new environment it seems to be looking for a seventh backup file which was not created.

We can however do an SQL backup and restore without issue, however the client would like clear clarrification of the differences between SQL restore and Nav restore. Does the Nav restore perform any validations which the SQL one would not which could risk problems occuring if the Nav restore is not carried out.

Re: SQL Backup Versus Nav Back up

    Hi

The classic backup backs up the structure of the database (Tables & Forms) and the data itself separately, when you restore it then re-created the whole lot from scratch, for this reason we sometimes use the native backup and restore to fix corruption errors

For this reason when you restore a native backup the system restores data, structure & keys as separate steps

The SQL database backup is just a backup of the database that is restored, the SQL database backup however is more than good enough we have many sites that have never had a native backup done on them, only SQL backups

Not being able to run a native backup or restore does point to problems that should be looked at and resolved,

In the meantime running a SQL only database backup is fine, just do a test restore regularly to ensure that the SQL backup is working while you resolve the issue

Things that you could test as a good starting place would be to run all your SQL tests on the database to check the SQL structure (DBCC CHECKDB)

Next test the structure within NAV by going in the classic client to File -> database -> information

Click the tables button and highlight a chunk of tables, then press the test button, test all the tables this way (You could do all at once but it may run for ages - big tables like the GL can be done individually)

Let me know if this makes sense and happy to help if you have any questions
