Infolog : Inventory closing or recalculation has reached the maximum number of iterations.

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

Anybody knows what this infolog error means :

"

Recalculation Inventory

This inventory closing or recalculation has reached the maximum number of iterations. For a more accurate result, consider increasing the maximum throughputs parameter."

We are doing a month end processing and this is the first time we encountered this infolog.

Please advise what do we need to do.

Thanks in advance.

Pia

Silvano, you have indicated that you're not sure if "increasing the number from 100 to 200 will solve our issue", but you have not detailed any issue.

Bottom line, 100 is plenty of Maximum throughput, and probably too many.  Whatever issue you're having, it will not be solved by making it 200.  Please open another thread to discuss another topic.

Inventory recalculation is driven by BOM levels, such that each item is only calculated once and never before a parent item.  So long as you have no circular references (which are not allowed anyway), there is no problem with items existing at different levels in different BOMs, and maximum throughputs has nothing to do with that.

Maximum throughputs are needed in cases where you have actual cost recursion.  The classic example would be where you transfer inventory from one site to another, and then transfer it back, typically under a weighted average cost model where each transfer could potentially impact the other.  Then multiple iterations could be required for the cost flow to approach (in the calculus sense of the word, like a limit of a function) the proper cost.

There are a couple of factors in Ax its possible to transfer negative stock  for example and can give some odd results on a single calculation.

Maximum throughputs are also used for production cost updates. Every sub assembly should get its cost updated before its used as a sub assembly component in a higher level BOM.

The challenge is that any sub assembly can exist at different levels in different BOMS. It can also be sold as  and finished product. So how does Ax know what is the right  sequence of  BOMs to take. Iterative calculation may be needed. The lowest level is a raw material component but in principle the max level should be at least as high as the maximum number of BOM levels you have.

Increasing iterations will impact performance so consider how many items/transaction you have that will be processed, and how frequently you will run the task.

thank you for your prompt feedback, just a question , i am not exactly sure what the number of iteration does to the system but if increasing the number from 100 to 200 will solve our issue , would it harm anything ? i am just asking because i am not really sure what this parameter does to the inventory recalculation

    thank you

It is found on the Inventory recalculation dialog, called Maximum throughputs.  You may have to expand the Advanced group to see it.

    hello Brandon

so where do you set the number of iterations ? i can't find it anywhere

    appreciate it

    regards

RE: Infolog : Inventory closing or recalculation has reached the maximum number of iterations.

It depends on your inventory flow, but certainly 100 is plenty in most cases.  Each successive iteration does less work and makes incrementally smaller and smaller adjustments (usually), so it's purely a trade-off of time over accuracy.  The only way to answer your question for sure is to run it both ways and compare the results, both from time consumed and also from adjustments made.

Please mark as answered if this helped you, so that it may help others in the future.

Thanks for the info. It really help.

By the way, what is the ideal set up for the maximum number of iterations. Right now, we set it to 200.

RE: Infolog : Inventory closing or recalculation has reached the maximum number of iterations.

Assuming your number of iterations is large, say 50 to 100 but certainly above 10, the message merely means that it had to loop through the calculation process more times than you allowed it in order to process the recalculation.  This is sometimes necessary to deal with circular inventory situations where a single calculation at the value of an issue can't be initially correct.  Good example of this is transfers back and forth between warehouses where the warehouse is part of your financial dimension setup.
