Upgrade AX 2012 R2 to R3

Hi All,

I'm currently testing upgrading from R2 to R3. I'm following the upgrade guide in Microsoft website, however there is few question that need some clarification. Any advice is much appreciated.

  1. If my R2 database do not contain any customization, do I still need to run through the code upgrade process?
  2. When I restore the R2 database, do I have to restore both DynamicsAX and DynamicsAX_model database since I do not have any customization on R2? Or I can just restore DynamicsAX to test system?
  3. Is it a MUST in my test system must install with R2 version 1st then following with database upgrade, AOS upgrade and etc?

Currently what I'm doing is

  1. Restore DynamicsAX database.
  2. Upgrade the database without specify base line database name.
  3. Install AOS, Client, Management Utilities, Debugger.

My test environment currently is fresh without any AX components installed.

Thanks.

Regards,
Teh

    1. No, you don't need code upgrade if you don't have any code to upgrade.
    2. Yes, restore both databases.
    3. Yes, if you're doing in-place upgrade. You start with a copy of your production environment.

    Hi Martin,

    Thanks for your reply.

Just wondering on #3, can I after restore both DB, then using R3 installer to upgrade database then follow by installing of AOS then client and other components? Meaning that my current test environment no need to install with R2 environment.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Teh
