How to add a new dimension to an existing ledgerdimension

My client has a lot of transactions in GeneralJournalAccountEntry with ledgerdimensions.

They also have a customed field to extend these dimensions.

I want to include this customized field in the ledgerdimensions in code.

Have you any examples or hints how to proceed?

Example.

GL record with ledgerdimension MainAccount-Department-Purpose Customized field Customized

This should result in a ledgerdimension :MainAccount-Department-Purpose-Customized

    Hi Erik,

Do you need the custom dimension which is not available as part of default dimension list? if yes then you can create the "Customer Dimension" by default and define the dimension value for the same and map this to accounting structure.

    Hope this helps you.

I can see from the suggestions that i was not clear enough.

My problem is that I have to select all GL transactions and update the ledgerdimension to har the value from the customized field

    ie.

    Old Ledgerdimension (display value) 1000-FIN-Purpose

    New ledgerDimension (display value) 1000-FIN-Purpose-Custom

    Hi Erik,

Can't you add the custom field into the text field / description that is posted with the voucher?

Another alternative would be adding the customized field content as reason code.

This would make customization much easier.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

Sorry This is not an option.

In the old version there was a lot of customized code to handle this field.

This can be avoided if the field is added to the ledger dimensions.

    Hi Erik,

Why don't you use a proper financial dimension in this case for adding the value that is tracked in this custom field?

I am asking this because what you described above can quickly result in a very complex adjustment that causes more problems than doing good if not done properly.

It might also cost you a lot of money making this modification.

Moving to D365FO gives you the chance to do things differently compared to what has been done previously in your 'old' system.

You should not miss this chance and directly start with a complex system modification.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Erik,

I do think you want to get rid of the custom field and have the value as new dimension included in existing accounting entries? I would not recommend trying to get the value in the ledger dimensions for existing transactions for some reasons:

    1) Auditors will not allow to change posted transactions.

    2) It would be very error prone to write a script. You can easily cripple the database.

Probably, you can better introduce the new dimension in the account structures and start working with it as of a certain date.

try creating a custom entity backed dimension and have that dimension supported by a table with values

then could add and activate in account structure
