Unable to export to CSV file

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 50

Hi. I'm trying to export/print a TB as a comma delimited file to open in Excel, but GP doesn't process it correctly (if I open with chrome, it looks like a "note" page). I was able to export these files as a CSV file a couple of weeks ago, and now it won't let me do it. It processes the report like it's doing it, the file shows up where I saved it to, but it's a "blank page" icon next to the file name. Is there a setting or something else I should be looking at/doing? TIA

    Hi Brenda,

I have some thoughts/questions for you on this.

Is it the ‘canned’ GP report writer trial balance report you’re trying to export/print, or is it an SSRS trial balance report?

If it’s the canned GP report writer report:

If you print the report to screen in GP, is there data showing?

If there is data, then double check to make sure you’ve selected the ‘File Format’ as ‘Comma-Delimited’ in the Export File window (when you click the Folder Icon in the Report Destination window):

Do you see how the file format shows ‘comma delimited’ in the Report Destination window, but NOT in the Export File window? You have to choose ‘comma delimited’ in both of these spots because the Export file window selection will override the format in the Report Destination window. I also recommend you add .csv at the end of your file name.

Also try saving the file locally (if you aren’t already to see if that makes a difference).

    I hope this helps!

    Hi Andrea,

Thank you for replying. Yes, I've tried all of those things...a report does show on the screen, and I've selected comma delimited option, as well as saving it locally. Any other thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Brenda

    Hi Brenda,

Exporting a TB report from GP to a CSV file has always been a cumbersome task and with sometimes strange results, and most of the time it will require a lot of post-export work..

Why no try to create your own refreshable Excel report with a TB SQL view ?

Victoria Yudin has some nice SQL views she created for the community to use for free to include in Excel reports (or Crystal report)

Thanks Beat. I don't quite feel comfortable writing SQL (even with the instructions). I've reached out to GP. They can't figure it out either. I had our IT dept look as well wondering if it was something in a setting that changed (we've had a lot of power outages, etc.), but they can't figure it out either.

Thanks David, my issue isn't length of the report (it's just a 2 page TB), or the location. I tested exporting to my desktop as well as going deeper into the network drive. When I try to save it to my desktop, I can't even locate the file, yet when I rerun it, it asks if I want to save over the old file. It's really strange. So now, I can't export csv files, but they also don't show up when I'm trying to save to my desk top.

    Brenda,

The SmartList export created Excel / CSV files are usually put in the %temp% folder location under your account..

if you open Windows Explorer and point to %temp%, you might find them there..

    Brenda,

I don't know if you ever solved the problem, but reading your last reply it sounds to me as if you are working with GP off a TS or Citrix Server remotely... because the behavior of trying to save the file to the desktop and you not being able to locate it, seems exactly this kind of situation.

There are ways to map your local user folders within a remote (RDP) session, or you could simply use a shared network location that is accessible from anywhere on your corporate network.

As for the formatting issues, I can only suggest that you may want to save the file as a simple 'text' report file and try to open it in Excel or an advanced Notepad (like Notepad++) to see how the data looks like.

Unfortunately, as I stated in an early reply, the output of a TB report in GP is not really meant to be opened in an Excel file..

Try running the same Trial Balance report in SSRS, which has a better format and does support Excel format export natively.
