Use QR Codes to select the right training

Posted on by 5

Hi,

I have to use MS guides for creating a large training project.
I have one client who needs to see around 100 different step by step trainings which all take place in the same room.
Right now the user have to search the right training in the menu on the hololens. After starting the training he can scan the QR Code to make sure he's at the right place.

Is it possible to use the QR Codes as identification for the training?

So, the operator puts on his hololens, starts guides and walks to the place he needs to do his training. He then scans an QR Code which is at the place he needs to do the training, and then the hololens automatically starts the training linked to this QR Code?!

Any ideas?

Kind regards
Pete

    Hi Ryan,

    thanks again.

I made all the updates. Maybe I didn't use the link from the updated version in my last test. idk

Right now the Client is running some tests at his site with my HL.

I'll give it a go when the HL is back. Might be in early september.

    Regards

    Christoph

    Hi Pete

Can you make sure you are on the latest PC/HL apps (version 403) and use the deeplink format from the updated version of the PC app.

The speed of the scan will depend on the size of the QR code, quiet zone, and background colour etc.

The expected behaviour is: scan code > launch link > login to Guides > select instance (if you have multiple) > launch guide

    Hi, thank you very much.

The HL2 managed to scan the QR Code (but you have to be very patient...)

However, the Guides-App didn't start the Training the link was going to. It just opens the app and shows me my normal startscreen with all guides to choose from. Any ideas?

    Kind regards

    Pete

    Hi Pete

Yes, you are  on the right track that by embedding a link to a guide in the QR code you can launch the guide just by looking at the QR code.

You just need to 'look' at the QR code from the homescreen/shell of the HL before you launch guides and you'll be prompted to launch the link.

    Here are the steps:

    1) Grab the link to your guide from the PC App

    2) Go to http://goqr.me/ and select "text" as the type

    3) Scan the QR code from the home screen on the HL2. Don't use any readers.

Here are some tips on creating a 'good' QR code:

Hi, thank you for this tip!

Can you please walk me through the steps of how to use this deeplink?

Do I just have to copy the Link and generate a QR code like with www.qr-code-generator.com/

Where's the function in the Hololens Guide App where I can scan the code? I only can choose the guides that on my account.

When I start one of them and scan my previosuly generated code it doesn't work.

    Kind regards

Guides on PC allows you to copy a link to a guide and even a step. It is a called a deeplink.

With this url/link, you can create a QRCode which can be scan by Guides on HoloLens
