Available Password Policy for NAV Authentication

Hi,

I wanted to find the kind of Password Policy NAV 2016 is able to setup, but other than WIndows  and UserName authentication using AD's password policy setup, I was not able to find out details on how other Credential Types manage Password Policy setup. I'd greatly appreciate if anyone can point me to any reference on how Password Policies for following Credential Types can be setup?

  • NavUserPassword
  • SQL Server Authentication

Thank you!

There might be references in Installation&Configuration manual.

After installation of client, you can change the configuration by modifying the web.config file. The Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web client settings are included in the <DynamicsNAVSettings> tag in the web.config file. ClientServicesCredentialsType setting might have Windows, UserName, NavUserPassword values. Set to NavUserPassword to authenticate users on a user name and password that is set up in Microsoft Dynamics NAV. When users try to access Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web client, they are prompted for a user name and password. The difference between NavUserPassword and UserName is that with NavUserPassword, a user is authenticated directly against the user name and password, whereas with UserName the user is authenticated against a Windows account in Active Directory.

    Alexander, Mahesh,

Thank you very much for your inputs. I've understood how to setup the different credential types, but I wanted to know how it is possible to setup the Password Policy (such as how many characters, when it expires, etc). There doesn't seem to be any documentation about this especially for NavUserPassword.

Also, through some additional looking up, I've came to understand that SQL Server Authentication is not for "end user" setup, but is simply an authentication between SQL DB and NAV server, so I guess I won't be using this at all.

For NavUserPassword do we need the end user machine & the server in same domain or without domain it can also work.

I have my server installed and installed Navision application & server on it. Now we have some users who are not part of domain, their machine is in workgroup but in our network.

So can we use the NavUserPassword to access Navision.

    Hi,

I think you may enter upto 250 characters in the Password field.

Expiry Date is available on the User Card.

    Mahesh,

But unlike expiration of the password, that Expiry Date is used to expire the user account itself. So unless "someone else" resets the account for the user, user cannot reset the password. And I don't see anywhere in NAV that allows to automatically set change password at next login after certain number of days.

This leads me to conclude that  password policy setup is something that must be customized in order to achieve.

For NavUserpassword you can ask your admin to set User Must Change Password at Next Login, then you can change your password.

Other way you can run the page 9809 Change Password where you provide your old password and new password.

you can search the page by typing change password in search and follow the link.

    Hi Kenjim,

I believe up to a certain level you have very correctly anticipated the behaviour of NavUserPassword.

As far as the password policy is concerned then Microsoft has already set certain standards for this like it should be alphanumeric with a special letter and a capital one.

Now the first time user opens his account then a pop up window opens where he is supposed to enter the new Password what he wants as per the above mentioned guidelines. Now whenever in future user wants to reset his password then he needs to ask from Someone else who can go inside NAV client and could do this for him.

Till now NavUserPassword Credential is behaving and working this way only, we can hope in future from Microsoft to update this the way or some how you are anticipating. :)
