OCR IN NAV 2016

Can someone please explain me how this OCR thing works in dynamics NAV 2016; do I have to sign up with an OCR company, pay an extra fee or does it comes included with the software.?

What if I just want to use the OCR as a document attachment process, I want to be able to scan in my signed copy of my invoices, and the system should look at the invoice # and route it to the correct customer is that a possibility with this new feature.

Thanks

ocr in nav 2016: "it uses an online service from Lexmark – or that’s what I remember. You have to sign up, and as far as I remember, you can use the service 75 times for free." thats all ... for now.: thx to waldo!

more after the navtechdays 2015 in antwerpen (19./20.11.). there is a session about that topic.

If you read the partner material it says :

Use a cloud OCR service to capture data from PDF or image invoices stored in incoming documents, and create corresponding documents in Dynamics NAV without retyping data.

The Readsoft Online OCR service is supported out of the box. With the Readsoft Online integration, header and total information can be extracted. Documents can also be forwarded directly to the OCR service using email. To use Readsoft Online, an account must be created on Readsoft Online, a free SKU will be available.

I think above quote will answer your question.

It answered  little bit of what i was asking

What i was asking is as follows. can i use the OCR  feature in dynamics NAV 2016 to scan in my signed invoices.

In our organization there is no incoming documents we have merchandise that gets delivered to the store and the store owner signed the invoice as proof of delivery. I would like to be able to scan them in as a batch process, and the system should route the document, (USING OCR, READING THE INVOICE #) to that specific customer posted sales invoice as as an attachment, if the customer ever request POD (proof of delivery). ?

You could scan any piece of paper and attached the link to any invoice, purchase or payable.

It is a cumbersome process, involving navigating to the scanned image, copying the path, saving the path with the appropriate document...rinse and repeat.  Our NAV partners made this process sound like a jam on toast feature, but in reality, it's an oblong wheel, with a few missing spokes.

I'm with you, I'm not getting too much out of the above responses other than 'the first 75 documents are free', maybe? Is that the first 75 of ALL documents, or the first 75 per day? per week? per month?

With 10,000 invoices per month, most with more than one page (and staples, and folds) we would like to be able to use OCR, FREE, as part of NAV, not as some other NOT-FREE service.

Probably just more promises with no actual follow through.  Anything to sell NAV.

And what of invoices we have customers sign on our tablets for? Can those 'document's be automatically attached to our sales invoices?  This is such a common feature nowadays, but seems to be pure custom programning in NAV.

    Yes, I agree

why would Microsoft advertise it as a free feature if it cost money.?

there are other 3rd party software add ins for dynamics nav that do the same thing.

And I agree it is extremely common at distribution companies (And nav is made for distribution companies) to scan in customer signed invoices, pick tickets, bill of lading. we should be able to just scan them in and OCR should route them to the specific document. or have a customer sign the tablet and the signature should get attached as proof.

I wonder if there is any code out there that would use the dynamics OCR for this feature. I think (I’m not sure) there is a standard OCR that comes with nav 2016 that is free.

    I've got another issue.

Does anyone know if it's possible to capture (item) lines?

According to ReadSoft Online they are able to capture both Header and Line items, however, in my test I only got the total invoice amount from the OCR service as a result.

Moreover, after creating the invoice, there seems to be no relation to the original Purchase Order respectively Purchase Shipment, although this information was included in the Invoice Lines.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

    Britta

Sorry, not seeing anything in that link about a FREE OCR service.

Don't actually see anything new that hasn't been available since at least NAV2009.

Another salesperson talking point "Oh look! NAV has built in OCR"!!! WOW!

About as useful as the Certificate of Insurance box in the Vendor cards...it's there, but does nothing, is linked to nothing, not associated expiration date, not selectable for download to Excel...useless checkbox.

Customers don't seem to have any way to track resale numbers, states applicable in, expiration dates.  Products don't have a way of flagging them as subject to sales tax or not.  Why, in the US version, are all these references cluttering up screen after screen to VAT???

This product is made for salespeople to sell.  Every day I find another 'cut-corners'/'don't finish the job'/slovenly design in NAV.
